The San Francisco Giants were given a painful reminder Thursday of the talent they missed out on in free agency as Aaron Judge, very much still playing for the Yankees, homered against starter Logan Webb just two pitches into his first plate appearance of the year.

The pain came all too quickly in the Giants’ season opener Thursday in New York. Just like the team whiffed on Judge in the offseason, Webb whiffed on a sinker that Judge demolished into center field.

For what it’s worth, Webb’s first game of the year has otherwise been stellar. In just five innings, he recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts. But the K he did not earn is the one that Giants fans probably wanted the most.

A Giants-Judge partnership briefly looked likely this winter, when the reigning American League MVP was taking meetings in San Francisco with his childhood team. It was a scenario that made Yankees general manager Brian Cashman a sweaty mess publicly.

However, it seems like it was all just a negotiation tactic, as Judge basically said his plan was to return to the Yankees all along and be in pinstripes for life. The strategy ended up netting him a nine-year, $360 million deal with New York and bringing pain to Giants fans everywhere. Thursday’s dinger was just a twist of the knife.
