American couple blow budget to buy mountain mansion on My Lottery Dream Home

0 92

Not everyone you see looking for a house on My Lottery Dream Home comes into money because of a lotto win.

In Florida couple Alicia and Rick’s case, their windfall was from an inheritance left to Alicia from her long-lost great uncle. That meant Alicia was $US900,000 richer, and looking for a vacation property in the mountains (all amounts in this article are in USD).

Alicia and Rick enlisted My Lottery Dream Home host David Bromstad to help them with their property search. They wanted a cabin-like property with three to four bedrooms, a lot of privacy and preferably furnished.

Though the couple were on the same page when it came to house features, they had differing views about the budget. Alicia wanted to spend between $400,000 and $600,000, while Rick didn’t mind pushing it to $700,000.

“If it’s very special,” Alicia insisted.

So after looking at two properties within Alicia’s budget, Rick asked to see what a higher budget would get them. And David certainly delivered with Outlook Lodge, a stunning multi-storey mountainside property with wrap-around decks, stunning furniture, a large hot tub, a bedroom on every level and epic forest views.

But there was a catch. Outlook Lodge was priced at $745,000 — a whopping $145,000 over Alicia’s budget.

“It’s a little cold up here,” Rick joked after hearing the budget.

“OK,” Alicia cringed.

That discomfort disappeared the second the couple walked inside. They loved the mountain rustic style, the views, the furnishings and the kitchen.

When it came time to make the decision, the doubts started to resurface for Alicia. Thinking through the pros and cons of each property, the couple started with Hickory Ridge, which was within Alicia’s budget at $479,000.

“It was cosy, in the mountains,” she said.

Next in the discussion was Moondrift Manor, also in Alicia’s budget at $478,300.

“It literally was like a fairy-tale home in the middle of the valley… The views there, the rolling hills, unbelievable — that got me right there on the spot,” Rick said.

But ultimately both Alicia and Rick couldn’t turn down Outlook Lodge, even if it was a “budget buster”.

“It is our style and taste, we didn’t have to do a thing to the house and I can spend my time not doing projects but meeting people and shopping downtown,” Alicia said a month after moving in.
