A tourist in Italy has sparked fury after posing semi-nude for an impromptu photo shoot on the steps of a historic church. The American woman was spotted modeling in front of the doors of the cathedral of Amalfi, one of the most-visited towns along the famed Amalfi Coast. She was captured on camera standing before the monument, covered only by a thin strip of red material.

Two others were involved in the shoot and all three face charges of public indecency. They were later caught by police and found not to have gained proper permission for the photo session.

Onlookers were outraged and videoed the shocking events. Locals were particularly appalled by the choice of location. The cathedral dates from the 9th century and the bronze doors, which formed the background to the tourist’s racy photos, were cast in 1067. The monument is a sacred place and deeply important to the community. The relics of St Andrew, Amalfi’s patron saint, are said to be housed inside.

In a video published by local press, a woman can be heard calling the tourist’s stunt “crazy.” Clearly shocked, she adds “naked at the church.” Another local news site said the woman arrived fully dressed at the church and removed her clothes after climbing up the steps. According to their report, the woman told police that they were taking photos to create a memory of their time in Amalfi as opposed to a publicity shoot.

The stunt follows a series of episodes of inappropriate tourist behavior, including throwing a scooter down the Spanish Steps in Rome and skinny dipping in the canals of Venice.
