Apple iPhone 13 review: A class above the competition

0 98

The new range of Apple’s latest iPhones is here.

Apple launched four new phones in September. There are upgrades to the camera, storage and battery. And a slight drop in price. Wins all around.

I’ve been spending some quality time with the iPhone 13, and this is how I’ve found using the device.

How do I get it and what will it cost?

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini both come in five colours – pink, blue, midnight, starlight and red.

The review model, iPhone 13, starts at $1,349 in Australia, with the Mini starting at $1,199.

I reviewed the iPhone 13 (pretty) in pink. All the latest plans in more detail can be found here for the latest iPhone 13 series.

Who is it good for?

The iPhone 13 Pro is the top-of-the-range phone in features, and in price – you can read that review here.

But the iPhone 13 is an outstanding mid-range phone. If you have an iPhone 12, or even an 11, and you’re happy for the moment – perhaps wait until next year’s upgrade.

But only because the 11 and 12 are excellent phones with is a testament to the quality of Apple’s builds and design. However, for anyone else, this is a major and very impressive improvement.

Let’s talk about the camera

The iPhone 13 features two cameras. One main and one ultra-wide.

They’re the same shape and size as the iPhone 13 Pro, except with the Pro you get an extra telephoto lens, and a few functionality upgrades.

Apple’s used improved sensors for this phone, which were not in the iPhone 12, but like its predecessor, they still feature a 12 megapixel shooter.

Both cameras are bigger and let in more light than the iPhone 12. I found it most obvious on the main camera.

Photos in good light are superbly balanced, detailed and look sharp.

The iPhone 13 excels in low light. We’ve barely used the night mode feature, as it hasn’t been needed. The ultrawide is crisp, and also does well in low light.

New camera features in the iPhone 13 include sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, Cinematic Mode for video, Picture Styles for stills and the new A15 Bionic chip, which Apple says makes it faster than other models in the market.

There’s no optical zoom in this model (but I personally didn’t lose any sleep over that). The selfie camera is also 12 megapixels, and is comparable to the iPhone 12.

What about the design?

The iPhone 13 is a similar design to the iPhone 12 – with flat, aluminium sides and super solid glass on the front and back. As with Apple products of late, it feels sturdy.

And I’ve cracked many a phone in my time. This one feels it could survive most of my clumsiness.

The screen is sharp and bright. Apple says it has a refresh rate of 60Hz, which is less than the iPhone 13 Pro model’s 120Hz displays.

Honestly, I’ve used both and my lay person’s eye can barely tell the difference.

As mentioned earlier, iPhone 13 has Apple’s latest A15 Bionic processor, which is a touch faster than the A14 in the iPhone 12. That aside – it is fast. Super fast.

And the battery life. Wow. I have not even come close to running it down below 20 per cent and I use my phone all the time.

The battery is a definite improvement over the previous model last year. You could easily not charge it overnight, and still have battery power for almost another full day.

What we think

Let’s cut to the chase. The iPhone 13 is an excellent phone.

The performance is exceptional thanks to its lightning-quick processing power. Battery life is game-changing, and the cameras are all of high quality.

Did it change the world with its design? Not really, but hands-on with an iPhone 13 and you can feel the difference from the 12.

Is it as good as the iPhone 13 Pro? Nope. But that’s ok. We don’t all want to spend the extra money on a phone, if we can’t justify it. Not all of us need macrophotography lenses in our pockets at all times.

The iPhone 13 is a class-leading product, and one worthy of upgrading to.

Apple provided this publisher with a device for testing purposes. This did not affect our views on the device, and our review remains independent of the manufacturer.
