Eternals star Barry Keoghan will appear in The Batman, with Warner Bros. having now updated its 2022 movie preview to include the actor’s name. After some hesitancy from the studio over which cut of the comic book movie to release, it seems they have chosen the one which features Keoghan, but is he playing The Joker?
Known for playing sinisterly creepy characters in the likes of The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Green Knight, Barry Keoghan was quietly revealed to be starring in The Batman back in August last year. While it has since been revealed that the actor will play GCPD Officer Stanley Merkel, a conflicted character with ties to James Gordon, there has been speculation ever since that he will in fact be this franchise’s version of The Joker. Perhaps, in an effort to make this take on Batman’s archenemy unique, Stanely Merkel and The Joker will be one and the same.
This speculation was fueled further by Keoghan’s own brother, Eric, who recently posted the following text last month before hastily deleting it; “So it’s finally out My Brother playing the JOKER in the new Batman Unreal Stuff.” While he could be trying to emulate the Clown Prince of Crime himself by playing a joke on us all, it’s beginning to look more and more possible that Keoghan could indeed bring the iconic supervillain to life opposite Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight.
The Batman has been described as a film noir that will focus on the title character’s talents as a detective more than any movie before it. The story will introduce audiences to an early version of the costumed vigilante, picking up two years into his crusade against Gotham City’s criminal underworld. With only a few trusted allies at his side, including Alfred Pennyworth and James Gordon, amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
Suddenly, The Batman meets his greatest threat so far, The Riddler, a killer who has begun murdering key Gotham elites and leaving tricksy riddles at the scene. This trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin, Carmine Falcone, and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler. The mission will set Batman on a collision course with his past, as the evidence begins to lead closer to home. Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
Directed by Matt Reeves, who wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/The Batman, alongside Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot/Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Additionally, the supporting cast also includes Jayme Lawson, Barry Keoghan, and Alex Ferns. The Batman is scheduled for release in the United States on March 4, 2022.
