Jeff Koz’s beloved pet also perished when their car was hit head-on Monday by a Ford Escape on U.S. Highway 199 near Selma, Ore., according to dailymail.com.

The 62-year-old Ford Escape driver was treated in the hospital and a two year old child in her car was uninjured.

Koz, 29, began his trip five years ago in his 1978 Beetle with his dog Shurastey along for the ride from Brazil through the Americas to Alaska.

But the trip was impeded in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic, which prohibited him from driving across the Mexico-United States border and forced him to return to Brazil.

He resumed in January in Mexico and reunited with the Volkswagen Beetle, which he playfully named Dodongo.

On the morning of February 10, he watched the sunset with Shurastey, his best friend of six years.

“I told him how important he was to me, and that I wouldn’t have made it this far without his company,” he wrote.

Last Saturday, Koz shared a photo of his Beetle parked in the middle of a camp site in Grants Pass with his sleeping tent perched atop the car.

“Hey my friends it’s time to enter Canada and finally head to Alaska,” he wrote in Portuguese.
