Princess Diana met some of the world’s biggest names in her time as a royal – but despite their celebrity status, it seems she never failed to leave them star-struck.

Over the years, many of these stars have shared anecdotes of their moments with the late Princess of Wales – from secret visits to the palace to spins on the dance floor – that illustrate the indelible impression she left.

The latest star to share their Diana encounter is Jennifer Connelly, who met the royal as a teenager in 1986. (Watch her recall the moment in the video above.)

Jennifer Connelly

After meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton at the royal premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, the actress spoke to Stephen Colbert about her last royal encounter.

In 1986, Connelly, then 16, attended the royal premiere of her film Labyrinth in London, where she had the opportunity to speak with Princess Diana.

“You can see how pink my cheeks are, I was so overwhelmed meeting her,” she told the talk show host.

“She was impeccable, she was lovely.”

Connelly had shared a photo of the moment on her Instagram ahead of the Top Gun: Maverick royal premiere.

Richard Branson

In August 2017, the Virgin mogul reflected on his favourite memories of Diana to mark the 20th anniversary of her death.

Explaining the princess had regularly flown with Virgin Atlantic and spent time at Necker Island, Branson said Diana always made time to talk with fellow passengers and staff, and always sent handwritten thank you letters afterwards.

“We often played tennis together and always had very competitive games. After a great match, she was always very relaxed, opening up, spending time with the team and fellow guests, and lighting up every room she entered,” he added.

“I can still picture Diana laughing with William and Harry on the beach when they were kids. She saw our little piece of paradise as an escape from the relentless press attention she received, and was in her element playing with her children like any other mum.”

Cindy Crawford

Diana invited the ’90s supermodel — along with Christy Turlington and Claudia Schiffer — for tea at Kensington Palace as a birthday surprise for Prince William.

“Princess Diana had somehow got the number to my office and called herself to ask for me. My assistant was in shock!” Crawford recalled on Instagram in 2017.

“I think Prince William was just starting to notice models and she thought it would be a cute surprise for him and Prince Harry.”

Though Crawford was nervous and didn’t know what to wear, Diana put her at ease.

“As soon as she came into the room and we started talking, it was like talking to a girlfriend. She was a class act and showed us all what a modern day princess should be.”

Billy Crystal

Friends of the late princess often reference her wicked sense of humour, and actor Billy Crystal enjoyed it first-hand at the London premiere of When Harry Met Sally in 1989.

Speaking to People magazine, Crystal recalled Diana joking with him as the lights went down and the screening began.

“She whispered to me, ‘I’m taking my shoes off.’ So I went, ‘I’m taking my pants off.’ And she goes, ‘Oh, you’re so naughty!'” he said.

“She had this terrible laugh! And I said to Rob [Reiner, director] later, ‘If this was a date, I’d never see her again! Just because she laughs like Eh heh eh heh.'”

Reiner added: “She turned to Billy and says, ‘I’d be laughing a lot more, except I know everybody’s looking at me.'”

George Michael

In the wake of Diana’s death, George Michael opened up about their friendship, describing her as “the Elvis of compassion”.

“Diana was the only person that I knew who made me feel like an ordinary person. That’s what I thought was so amazing about her,” he told The Mirror.

“I thought: ‘How can you not live in complete anger with these people who will never leave you alone?’ … I thought she was so great not to be consumed by everything that had happened to her and to keep giving and giving.”

Rita Hanks

Rita and Tom Hanks encountered the princess at a London screening of Apollo 13, with the singer finding Diana to be “gracious, charming, funny and kind.”

“I was expecting our second son at the time and she kept asking me if I was comfortable, and if I needed anything,” Rita recalled in an Instagram post.

“She was a gregarious dinner partner, laughing and engaged. I think she felt like a ‘normal’ person. It was when she got up from the table it became so noticeable that she wasn’t ‘normal.’ The entire restaurant went silent and watched her.”

John Travolta

The image of Princess Diana taking a spin with John Travolta at the White House is an unforgettable one, and the Saturday Night Fever star has since called it one of the highlights of his life.

According to Travolta, then-US First Lady Nancy Reagan, who hosted the gala event, had informed him it was Diana’s “wish” to dance with him on the night.

“At midnight, I had to tap her on her shoulder, and I had to say, ‘Would you care to dance?'” he explained in an interview.

“She turned around and dipped her head in that Lady Diana way, and we were off … I know for a fact that it was her highlight of being in the United States; it was her favourite moment.”

Travolta has also recalled he explained his “theory of jetlag” to the royal as they danced.

Tom Selleck

Travolta wasn’t the only star Diana danced with that night; she also hit the dance floor with actors Tom Selleck and Clint Eastwood and singer Neil Diamond.

“I made the terrible mistake of cutting in on John Travolta… can you imagine?” Selleck admitted to the Daily Mail, referring to the actor’s famous dancing skills.

“I was so nervous, I couldn’t think of anything sensible to say.

“It remains one of my great regrets – I danced with Princess Diana and couldn’t say a damn interesting thing to her the whole time, nor ask any of the questions I would have loved to ask her.”

Elton John

A close friend of Diana’s, Elton John has shared various fond memories of the beloved royal.

Writing in his memoir Me, the pop icon recalled meeting Diana for the first time in 1981 at Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday party at Windsor Castle.

“She arrived in the ballroom and we immediately clicked. We ended up pretending to dance the Charleston while hooting at the disco’s feebleness,” he said.

“She was fabulous company, the best dinner party guest, incredibly indiscreet, a real gossip: you could ask her anything and she’d tell you.”

John said Diana was “blessed with an incredible social ease” and had the ability to “make people feel totally comfortable in her company”.
