0 128

According to a recent Axios article, almost all major U.S. airlines have proactively cut their schedules, some by as much as 15%, with operations stretched to the brink.

Below I’ve rounded up several U.S. destinations that serve as worthy fill-ins for more far flung destinations. From Providence, RI to Reno Tahoe, NV, these domestic getaways are serving up world-class art, cuisine and scenery, without the hassle of an international trip.

Swap Venice for Providence, RI

Providence, Rhode Island could be called a “mini-Venice,” complete with canals running through the city, a unique WaterFire arts spectacle, and a world-class Italian dining scene. Providence’s gondola rides are authentic, leisurely cruises through the winding canals.

Additionally, the city just welcomed Bellini, the world-class restaurant run by Ignazio Cipriani, which also debuted Bellini Rooftop in early May, the city’s first private rooftop club open to Bellini members and hotel guests. Named for the iconic Bellini cocktail at Harry’s Bar in Venice, diners can delight in elevated takes on classic New England dishes, like Clams alla “Veneziana” (white wine sauce), or try out the namesake Bellini while overlooking The Renaissance city from above.

Where to Stay: The Beatrice opened in October 2021, marking the first new boutique property in the city in nearly a decade. Owned by the former Mayor of Providence, Joseph Paolino, the property is located within the iconic 1887 Exchange Building in downtown, and is a nod to Mr. Paolino’s mother, Beatrice Temkin, who was a community leader and lifelong philanthropist.

Hiking, Spa and Cheese – Not Switzerland, but Vermont

Switzerland packs a big punch in the tourism landscape of Europe, with mountains and valleys — much like Vermont. Woodstock, VT has been dubbed “the prettiest small town in America,” with more than 60 miles of interconnected trails and pathways that wind through Woodstock Village, as well as magnificent vistas from the summits of Mount Peg and Mount Tom.

Head to Billings Farm & Museum to visit the fully-operating dairy farm, to sample world-class cheeses produced by their Jersey cows, and take a stroll through the dreamy Sunflower House. Try a Red Barn Dinner, hosted by Kelly Way Gardens‘ master gardener Benjamin Pauly and Woodstock Inn & Resort Executive Chef Rhys Lewis; the dinner-party style events feature the local artistry of Vermont’s cheesemakers, farmers, beekeepers, and dairy farmers, while celebrating the bounty of Kelly Way Gardens, another working farm available to tour.

Where to Stay: The Woodstock Inn & Resort, the former Rockefeller estate, is cherished for its preservation of Woodstock history and providing a quintessential New England summer getaway.

New for this summer, the 10,000-square-foot spa has partnered with green beauty specialists, Tata Harper. Guests can also participate in a range of activities, including world-class golf, falconry, tennis, fly fishing and more.

The Stateside Arts Festival and The Surrounding City in Nevada

World-renowned arts festivals like Art Basel, Biennale of Sydney, and Hong Kong International Arts Fair are famous, but Burning Man (August 8- September 5, 2022) earns a spot at the top of the list as well. Burners and culture-seekers can experience the intrigue of the fantastical arts gathering with a visit to nearby Reno Tahoe.

Whether you’re a die-hard Burner or simply seeking a getaway rich in western arts and culture, Reno Tahoe has several new city attractions celebrating the legacy of the Black Rock Desert gathering. Arts and maker space The Generator (known lovingly as The Genny) has reopened in its new 187,000-square-foot space in the much anticipated Oddie District. Since 2013, local and international artists alike have assembled Burning Man’s famous, colossal structures at The Genny before sending the giant works of art to the desert to burn at the festival.

Visitors and the local community (kids included!) are welcomed to peruse the vast warehouse filled with artisans at work and relics from Burning Mans past. Additionally, the “Biggest Little City’s” brand new Neon Line District is comprised of 20 blocks in Downtown Reno lined with sculptures from past Burning Man festivals, and visitors can embark on art tours with Art Spot Reno or the Nevada Museum of Art for more art appreciation.

Where to Stay: Nestled in downtown Reno, The Jesse boutique hotel is made up of six artfully-designed suites, an extensive outdoor patio, and Taco and Mezcal bar, Estella. The property embodies Jesse Lee Reno’s independent and adventerous spirit, and celebrates history and culture while looking to the future of a bustling and vibrant downtown Reno.

Explore Madison, WI and its German Roots

German immigrants settled in and around Milwaukee in the early 1900s, leaving a legacy of beer and bratwurst. If Miller Lite is a bit too mainstream for you, head an hour west to Madison, WI. While Germany has its famed Mecklenburg Lake District, or “Land of A Thousand Lakes,” Madison, Wisconsin centers around five glistening lakes: Mendota. Monona. Waubesa. Kegonsa. and Wingra. Since 1983, the city has hosted the World’s Largest Brat Fest kicking off each summer, selling more than four million brats to raise almost $2 million to benefit 100+ local charities.

Where to Stay: Graduate Madison is set alongside Lake Mendota. Their rooftop bar and restaurant, Camp Trippalindee, celebrates the spirit of summer past, seven stories above Madison, with design nods to 1980s camp movies celebrating the all-out joy of being a kid. New for this summer, the rooftop is doling out free Jell-O shots for yogis coming from the outdoor yoga classes in downtown Madison.
