A new North Beach restaurant called Hilda and Jesse refused to serve three armed San Francisco police officers on Friday, saying their weapons made staff feel uncomfortable. By Saturday, the restaurant’s Yelp page had been review bombed with dozens of one-star reviews criticizing the incident.
Hilda and Jesse has since apologized, but now, another completely unrelated San Francisco restaurant is feeling the heat.
North Beach Restaurant, located at 1512 Stockton St. in San Francisco, seems to have gotten caught up in a case of mistaken identity. Since the weekend’s controversy unfolded, the restaurant’s general manager told KRON4 that they’ve been bombarded with hateful reviews and phone calls.
“I started picking up the phone today, and some people were very nice and understanding and listening,” general manager Maureen Donegan told KRON4. “Other people screaming and lots of hate.”
Most likely, the confusion arose from people referring to Hilda and Jesse as “a North Beach restaurant” on social media, Donegan told KRON4.
“It’s shocking that people don’t read all of the information and just assume,” she added.
Yelp has placed an unusual activity alert on North Beach Restaurant’s page, temporarily blocking new reviews. The restaurant has also added a new update to their page, clarifying, “It Was Not North Beach Restaurant!! … North Beach Restaurant has a Long, Happy and Healthy Friendship with the SF Police Department and they have our Utmost respect! We served two SF policemen dinner on Saturday Night and would Never ask a Cop to Leave North Beach Restaurant! Please Stop Yelping us and calling here with Threats. It is Misdirected.”
