Conor Benn officially charged by UKAD over positive drugs tests and faces potential two-year ban from boxing

Conor Benn has now been officially charged by UKAD (UK Anti-Doping) following his positive drugs tests last year and so is facing a potential ban from boxing.

The 26-year-old welterweight contender twice tested positive for the banned PED (performance-enhancing drug) clomifene in VADA drugs tests last year, ultimately causing his fight with Chris Eubank Jr to be cancelled.

For months, Benn has refused to co-operate with the UKAD investigation into his positive tests due to a feud with the BBBofC (British Boxing Board of Control).

The Brit instead co-operated with the separate WBC investigation into his positive drugs tests and provided them with a 270-page defence report in an attempt to clear his name.

However the sanctioning body never held the power to ban him, only to remove him from their own rankings.

When the WBC ultimately made their ruling and chose to reinstate Benn into their welterweight top 15, he rejected their reasoning.

The sanctioning body dismissed Benn’s claims of lab errors being the cause of his positive tests and instead suggested a highly elevated consumption of eggs could have been the explanation.

Benn refuted this, but announced plans to return to the ring on June 3 regardless, potentially in the USA or UAE as the BBBofC are currently refusing to allow him to box in the UK until the drugs tests situation is resolved.

The BBBofC then intervened and insisted that anybody who holds a licence with them could face sanctions for involvement in a Benn fight, even if it takes place overseas.

It’s understood that Benn is now co-operating with the UKAD investigation and his team have provided his 270-page defence report to them as well.

As a result of this, UKAD have provisionally suspended Benn and formally charged him with ‘alleged use of a prohibited substance’ – which could see him receive a two-year ban from boxing if found guilty.

A statement from UKAD read: “Following reports in the media and comments made by professional boxer Mr Conor Benn on Tuesday 18 April 2023, and in exceptional circumstances, UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) confirms that Mr Benn was notified and provisionally suspended by UKAD on 15 March 2023 in accordance with the UK Anti-Doping Rules.

“Whilst provisionally suspended Mr Benn is prohibited from participating in any capacity (or assisting another athlete in any capacity) in a competition, event or activity that is organised, convened, authorised or recognised by the British Boxing Board of Control or any other World Anti-Doping Code-compliant sport.

“UKAD can also confirm that on 3 April 2023 it charged Mr Benn with an Article 2.2 violation for the alleged use of a prohibited substance (clomifene).

“The charge against Mr Benn is pending and will now follow the Results Management process in accordance with the UK Anti-Doping Rules.”

A statement from the BBBofC (British Boxing Board of control shortly followed.

It read: “The British Boxing Board of Control Limited (‘BBBofC’) refers to a statement published today, 20 April 2023, by UK Anti-Doping (‘UKAD’).

“As stated therein, the BBBofC can confirm that Conor Benn has been charged by UKAD with an article 2.2 violation for the alleged use of a prohibited substance.
