Coronation Street actress Shelley King has revealed that she is being assessed for autism aged 67.

Shelley, who plays Yasmeen Metcalfe who co-owns the Pakistani street food restaurant Speed Daal with granddaughter Alya Nazir (Sair Khan), had tests after noticing symptoms such as anxiety and a fear of crowds.

She said: “I noticed myself becoming quite unreasonable. I didn’t like crowds and I didn’t want to go out so I decided I’d try to get a diagnosis for autism.

“I don’t think 67 is too old, it’s never too late.”

Calcutta-born King joined the ITV soap on July 4, 2014 with husband Sherif (Marc Anwar) as part of the show’s first Muslim family.

Two years later in September 2016, Anwar was sacked from the show after he made an unfortunate series of tweets about India and Pakistan.

His character was written out and he departed off-screen when he was said to be having an affair.

King, who lives with her girlfriend Trilby James, told Kaye Adams on her How To Be 60 podcast: “I’ve always had a temper, I’m very pedantic and I like to plan things.

“Simple things that people take for granted have not been easy. I read every book in the children’s library because…I could understand them but myself I found them quite difficult.”

She believes autism may have drawn her to acting: “If I sing it makes me feel better.”
