Covid infection causes cells to ‘explode’ and damage multiple organs, study finds

Covid researchers are only beginning to understand the destruction caused by the coronavirus. Multiple organ failure has been found in some badly affected patients

Cells infected with Covid may explode and damage multiple organs, warns new research

Ever since the Covid-19 outbreak, many researchers have come up with studies showing how the virus enters the cells of the organs and infect them, leading to severe health conditions.

In a recent study, a team of UK researchers found that some cells infected with the Covid-19 virus can “explode”, leading to serious damage to the lungs, liver and other internal organs.

Published in the journal Nature, the researchers said that immune cells that are majorly infected by the Covid virus can undergo a “cell explosion”, also known as pyroptosis.

This process causes harmful inflammation in patients who become seriously unwell with the virus as a result.

Pyroptosis also represents a form of cell death.

Researchers said that pyroptosis kills the virus, but leads to inflammatory contents being released into the bloodstream.

These inflammatory contents travel around the body, damaging the lungs and other internal organs.

Some people infected with SARS-CoV-2 develop abnormal blood clotting.

“In some people with Covid-19, we’re seeing a massive inflammatory response, the cytokine storm that raises clotting factors in the blood,” says Panagis Galiatsatos, a specialist in lung diseases.

How Covid can cause multiple organ failure

Another study published in The Lancet investigated evidence that Covid-19 causes multi-organ failure.

The research investigated 11 patients who had tested for Covid with infected cells being found in multiple organs, most abundantly in the lungs.

“Other SARS-CoV-2-positive organs included the upper respiratory tract, heart, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract,” noted the study.

It concluded: “Our results show that Covid-19 is a systemic disease.

“Almost all organs harbour SARS-CoV-2 immune-positive cells, detectable up to six weeks after onset of symptoms.

“In the lungs, SARS-CoV-2 was present in the greatest abundance.”

The research found that inflammatory changes most frequently occurred in the lungs, heart, kidneys, and brain.

What is a cytokine storm?

A cytokine storm is a severe immune reaction in which the body releases too many cytokines – small proteins that help control the growth and activity of immune system and blood cells – into the blood too quickly.

Cytokines play an important role in normal immune responses, but having a large amount of them released in the body all at once can be harmful.

“Cytokine storms can be caused by autoimmune disorders, immunotherapy, and infections such as the one that causes Covid-19,” explains Healthline.

The site added: “A cytokine storm can occur in many parts of your body and cause a wide variety of symptoms that range from mild to life-threatening.”

Cytokine storm s ymptoms

Patients experiencing a cytokine storm reaction may suffer from the following:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Rash
  • Weakness
  • Vomiting

Medical attention should be sought quickly if symptoms get worse.

How Covid can cause liver damage

Just like the way Covid affects the lungs of a human body, it can wreak havoc on the liver, too.

Researchers found the liver cells undergo the same pyroptosis process, which leads to cell explosion and the release of inflammatory materials that harm the surrounding cells.

“In patients who have liver issues, this primarily occurs because of ‘leaky gut’, so bacterial components can reach the liver from the gut, and cause pyroptosis of liver cells leading to liver failure,” warned consultant hepatologist Gautam Mehta.
