Deborah James reveals plans for her last days

Deborah James will make her final TV appearance on Embarrassing Bodies – and has told bosses to air it even if she dies.

The TV and radio star has moved to hospice at home care amid her battle with bowel cancer, and she has made it her life’s mission that despite her own health battle, she wants to raise awareness of bowel cancer.

Deborah filmed scenes for the E4 medical show Embarrassing Bodies earlier this year, where she spoke to young people about her own experiences with cancer, and these will be aired from June onwards when the new series returns.

Speaking to The Sun, she said: “I might not live to see the episode air but I hope the message to ‘Check your poo’ will live on, long after I’m gone. It might be embarrassing but it might just save your life.

“Early diagnosis of things like bowel cancer saves lives. So don’t live to regret it, and don’t risk dying because you’re shy. I’ve given my blessing for this episode to run if I’m gone, if it helps save one life it will be worth it.”

Earlier this month, Deborah shared a heartbreaking post with her followers on Instagram, as she admitted her body “wasn’t playing ball” and she explained she had come off “active care”.

“The message I never wanted to write. We have tried everything, but my body simply isn’t playing ball. My active care has stopped and I am now moved to hospice at home care, with my incredible family all around me and the focus is on making sure I’m not in pain and spending time with them,” she penned at the time.

“Nobody knows how long I’ve got left but I’m not able to walk, I’m sleeping most of the days, and most things I took for granted are pipe dreams. I know we have left no stone unturned. But even with all the innovative cancer drugs in the world or some magic new breakthrough, my body just can’t continue anymore.”

She has documented her cancer battle throughout its entirety

Since then, Deborah set up the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK, which has already amassed a huge £6million. She has also been made a Dame and was visited by Prince William, who handed her the honour.

“To the @dukeandduchessofcambridge for going above and beyond to make a very special memory happen yesterday. Can’t quite believe I’m actually a Dame! My family are being amazing and as emotional as it all is, we are finding so much to smile about in the sadness. I may be getting weaker and more tired each tired having run off pure adrenaline, but my word, I always said I wanted to slide in sideways when my time is up, with a massive smile, no regrets and a big glass of champagne! Still my intention!!!” she wrote.
