Disneyland plans summer debut for ‘Lion King’ show

0 69

A “Lion King” musical stage show coming to Disneyland this summer will offer a new adaptation of the ancestral story of how a young lion cub becomes king of the jungle told with singers, dancers and drummers.

The “Tale of the Lion King” show will open in early summer at Disneyland’s Fantasyland Theatre, according to the Disney Auditions website.

Disney Live Entertainment is seeking singers, dancers and drummers for the “Lion King” show with rehearsals beginning in late April, according to the audition website.

The “early summer” timeline means the Anaheim theme park is likely targeting a late June or early July debut for the “Tale of the Lion King” show.

Disney is hiring vocalists for the African lion roles of Simba, Nala, Mufasa and Scar as well as Pumbaa the warthog, Timon the meerkat and hyenas Banzai and Shenzi. An Earth mother character named Mwongozo — Swahili for “guide” — will serve as the show’s narrator.

Disneyland’s entertainment team is also looking for dancers who can sing and drummers skilled in djembe, dundun, shakers and other West African percussion techniques to join the traveling troupe of African storytellers who tell the “Lion King” story through song and dance.

The vocalists, dancers and drummers of all genders, abilities, types and ethnicities will represent the rich culture and heritage of Africa, according to the Disney Auditions website.

The “Tale of the Lion King” show moves to the Fantasyland Theatre after playing on the banks of Paradise Bay in the “World of Color” viewing area before the pandemic closure of Disney California Adventure.

The modest-sized DCA show featuring an ensemble cast of 18 performers will likely expand to match the scale and size of the Fantasyland Theatre.

The DCA production featured new musical arrangements of popular songs from the original film, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019. At the time, the theme park stage show served as a movie tie-in for the photo-realistic computer-generated remake of “The Lion King.”

The new score incorporated elements inspired by the original compositions. Vocal performances were paired with a percussive soundtrack provided by a troupe of drummers.
