0 32

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic put on an impressive performance on Saturday as he defeated American Frances Tiafoe in his first match since winning Wimbledon in July, then teamed up with Matteo Berrettini to put Team Europe on top. command in the Laver Cup.

With Roger Federer watching from the court, at a sold-out O2 Arena the day after his emotional farewell match alongside Rafa Nadal, Djokovic returned to action in riveting fashion.

Tiafoe, a US Open semifinalist, was powerless to stop Djokovic’s attack and the Serb prevailed 6-1 6-3 to put Björn Borg’s European team ahead 6-4.

He then teamed up with Berrettini, the man he beat in the 2020 Wimbledon final, to beat the Rest of the World Team duo Jack Sock and Alex De Minaur 7-5 6-2 to give Team Europe an 8-4 lead heading into Sunday’s final four games.

Singles matches were worth one point on Friday, two on Saturday and three on Sunday. Thirteen points are needed to win the trophy.

After Federer’s memorable final match the night before, Matchday 2 could have been an anticlimax, but the quality of the tennis and the presence of the Swiss great on the bench ensured a magnificent spectacle.

Berrettini, who replaced the Swiss 20-time Grand Slam singles champion, won a tough duel against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(11), 4-6, 10-7.

But the American Taylor Fritz tied the Rest of the World 4-4 in the second game of the day with a narrow victory against the British Cameron Norrie, Nadal’s substitute who left the tournament for personal reasons.

Fritz won 6-1 4-6 10-8 and John McEnroe’s Rest of the World Team showed they are made of stronger stuff this year after being beaten 14-1 last year in Boston.

Federer, who watched every ball along with the rest of his Team Europe colleagues, including Andy Murray, did his best to pick Norrie up with a few words of wisdom.

At one point, Federer suggested the world number eight serve and volley, which Norrie quickly did, but lost the point when Fritz lobbed him over his head.

“If Roger Federer tells you to do something, there’s no chance he won’t, especially playing for the Europe team,” Norrie said later.

Djokovic’s decision not to get vaccinated against COVID-19 prevented him from playing in the US Open, and the young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz took the opportunity to win the tournament and become the new number one in the world.

But Djokovic made a statement by picking up where he left off by beating Nick Kyrgios on Center Court at Wimbledon to claim his 21st Grand Slam title.

Not even Federer could have improved on a first set in which Djokovic dropped no points on serve and landed his precise groundstrokes close to the lines with relentless regularity.

Tiafoe was at a disadvantage early in the second set but gained some traction to press hard again and had a break point which Djokovic masterfully parried.

Djokovic solved it in just over an hour.

“I haven’t played for a few months so I’m happy to continue the streak, it’s been a pretty decent match from my side I have to say,” Djokovic commented on court.

Djokovic then paid tribute to Federer’s emotional final from the night before. “It was one of the most beautiful moments that we have experienced live or on the tennis courts. It has left us all speechless,” said Djokovic.
