Bluestem Restaurant & Market in downtown San Francisco is closing after 11 years, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle (the Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms). The restaurant owners shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday.
“When we opened Bluestem, we set out to create a restaurant and community gathering space where people felt welcomed, well-fed, thoughtfully cared for, and ultimately known,” read the announcement. “… We are very proud to say that over the last 11 years, we have been able to collaborate and evolve beyond that ambitious vision thanks to the contributions of countless incredible humans.”
Bluestem was known for its California coastal fare, seasonal cocktails and unique pastries like the popular Honolulu Hangover Cake from pastry chef Lori Baker. The restaurant’s last day of service will be on Saturday, Dec. 24.

Until last year, Bluestem was known as Bluestem Brasserie. After a lengthy pandemic closure, it reopened in November 2021 with a slightly different name and a new grab-and-go market. Owners Stacy and Adam Jed told Eater SF that they made the changes after observing how consumer behavior in downtown had changed since the pandemic.
“The pandemic has had a permanent impact on how we dine and gather,” Stacy Jed told Eater. “We hibernated right away, and kept an eye on the downtown market, which has been a quieter part of the city.”
The owners did not provide a reason for the closure, and SFGATE could not reach Bluestem for comment in time for publication.
“As we are winding down over the next few days, we would love to see your familiar faces,” the co-owners shared on Instagram. “Until then, we want to offer our heartfelt thanks. Thank you for entrusting us with your care, whether as a regular or during a single visit. We are so grateful.”
Bluestem Restaurant & Market, 1 Yerba Buena Lane, San Francisco. Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Dec. 24.
