Dozens of residents evacuated during 4-alarm fire at Anaheim recycling plant – Orange County Register

0 41

A 4-alarm fire at an Anaheim recycling plant forced brief evacuations of dozens of nearby residents on Thanksgiving night before firefighters got a handle on the blaze, authorities said.

Anaheim Fire and Rescue firefighters arrived at the plant, in the 500 block of South Rose Street, about 11 p.m. and found a large column of smoke indicating a well-involved fire, spokesman Sgt. Shane Carringer said.

Firefighters called for more resources as the blaze grew in an outdoor rubbish pit, Carringer said.

They also asked for assistance from police in evacuating 40 to 50 nearby residents until the fire was knocked down just past 12:30 a.m. Friday, Carringer said.

The fire was contained to the outdoor area and no damage to structures was reported, Carringer said. No one was injured.

Firefighters remained on scene Friday morning conducting overhaul and checking for hotspots in an 80-foot by 100-foot area, including a 20-foot tall trash pile of paper, cardboard and other combustible materials, the sergeant said.

Arson investigators were also on scene, though the fire was not necessarily set on purpose. Investigators would comb through surveillance video and talk to witnesses, Carringer said.

Firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority, as well as the Fullerton, Brea and City of Orange fire departments, assisted in dousing the blaze, Carringer said.
