Dwayne Johnson realizes the immense potential of the upcoming DC film Black Adam. Set for an Oct 21 release date, the marketing has ramped up for our feature-film look at the antihero. In addition, Johnson and DC are beginning to explore the possibility of spinoffs from the movie’s characters.
Pierce Brosnan plays Dr. Fate in Black Adam, Aldis Hodge is Hawkman, and Noah Centineo is Atom Smasher. Any one of these characters could receive their own movie, and Johnson would love to see it happen. In the latest issue of Total Film, the Black Adam actor says, ‘The goal is to really expand the universe,’ however, we don’t know how the DC team would do that under the new Warner Bros. Discovery regime. CEO David Zaslav wants to create a ten-year plan for the DCEU, and this expansion from Black Adam may be part of it.
“The goal is really to expand the universe, and introduce new characters, and spin-offs, and be really strategic about the plan. We have a few ideas of what characters people are really going to respond to in Black Adam, and so we’re already thinking ahead to: ‘Lets start thinking about that movie, and what that movie looks like for them.'”
Producer Hiram Garcia reiterates Johnson’s point, adding the opportunity for crossovers that everyone has been looking forward to. Recent reports confirmed Johnson pushed to get Black Adam his own movie, apart from something with Shazam. However, that doesn’t rule out any future pairings.
“While [Black Adam and Shazam] may not be crossing paths, everything exists in a big umbrella of the DC universe. And we want to be able to build out the universe as big as we can, and, you know, with those ambitions. If everything’s received the way we hope it will be, we have opportunities to potentially see crossovers in certain points.”
Dwayne Johnson Wants to See a Marvel Crossover Event
Marvel has its schedule planned until 2025, with Avengers: Secret Wars, the culmination of Phase 6, and the Multiverse Saga the MCU is currently in. However, Dwayne Johnson is leaving the door open for a potential crossover event with DC and Marvel somewhere down the line. The actor tells Total Film, ‘To me, they can not only exist, but they should, in my mind, cross paths one day.’
“I am optimistic. Just my nature is optimistic. And especially when it comes to creative. Especially when it comes to movies. And especially when it comes to the pantheon of DC superheroes and supervillains. Across the street, we have the pantheon of superheroes and supervillains of Marvel. To me, they can not only exist, but they should, in my mind, cross paths one day.”
The amount of planning and work required to get these franchises to cross paths is immense. Still, the film would undoubtedly be a blockbuster that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav would be keen to. So, for now, let’s wait for the release of Black Adam in October and see if the film is worthy of spinoffs and sequels.
