Australian DJ and music producer Flume has topped Triple J’s Hottest 100 with his song Say Nothing.

It’s the second time the globally renowned producer, real name Harley Streten, has topped the annual countdown.

“I did not expect this,” he said on ABC radio from Los Angles after the countdown finished on Saturday.

“It’s just really cool, (I’m) shocked.”

Flume said he grew up listening to Hottest 100 and winning was a “beautiful thing”.

“It was part of my life and childhood and so to be so present in it all is surreal,” he said.

Triple J’s music director Nick Findlay said Say Nothing had been popular worldwide since it was debuted on the station in February 2022.

“Flume’s disjointed percussion and hypnotic melodies wrapped up in MAY-A’s enchanting vocals had all the ingredients of an instant classic,” he said.

Flume is only the second artist to have a song voted No 1 on the Hottest 100. Powderfinger did it consecutively in 1999 and 2000.

All told, Flume has had 17 tracks in the yearly poll since his 2012 debut.

He’s also the only act in the countdown’s history to rank a song in every position of the top five.

His song Say Nothing features Australian singer and songwriter Maya Cumming, known professionally as MAY-A.

The Hottest 100 received more than 2.4 million votes for the 2022 poll.

There were 57 songs from Australian artists in the winner’s list, with 23 artists breaking into the top 100 for the first time.

According to music streaming service Spotify, Flume makes atmospheric dance music inspired by house and UK garage.

The annual Hottest 100’s top three were rounded out by English DJ, music producer and singer Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal with Baddest Of Them All and Hardlight by Perth garage rock outfit Spacey Jane.
