Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo revealed her thoughts on the groundbreaking show’s use of social issues within episodes during a recent podcast episode.
During the Wednesday edition of her show, Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo, she took questions from fans regarding the show and her career.
A listener, identified only as the name Jessica, said, “Grey’s Anatomy is really a socially progressive show. It’s featured a lot of women, people of color, queer characters in addition to hard-hitting social and political plot points. What is something that you feel hasn’t been addressed yet on Grey’s Anatomy that you would like to see addressed?”
“This is a tricky question to answer because the truth is we’ve covered a lot of very important topics. And we do talk a lot about things,” Pompeo said.
“I think if I had any desire, honestly, it would be to be less sort of preachy in one episode about certain things. It’s like we do one episode about let’s see Asian hate crimes, is one that we did this past season that was really moving,” she said.
Pompeo suggested that , social issues covered in future episodes could occur more subtly than in the past. “I think I’d like to see things happen a little more subtly and over time, you know, consistently and less sort of hit you over the head with it for just one hour and then we never talk about it again,” she added.
“I wish we could sort of touch on these social issues that are important and relevant and sort of have them be threads throughout,” Pompeo concluded.
Grey’s Anatomy debuted in 2005 and the show’s 19th season premieres later this year. Pompeo will be reprising her role as Meredith Grey.
