Jermaine Franklin is ready for the biggest fight of his career this weekend against Anthony Joshua live on talkSPORT.

The American boxer has been handed a massive opportunity to fly up the heavyweight rankings when he steps into the ring at the 02 Arena.

This is the fight Franklin has been waiting for

The ‘989 Assassin’ heads into this one off the back of a defeat to Dillian Whyte, but knows he could become a hero.

And despite that bout against Whyte, Franklin is largely an unknown in the United Kingdom.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed a steady but unspectacular career in the ring but has his eyes on the big guns if he wins.

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are among the massive names that Franklin wants should he put a massive dent in Joshua’s career.

Jermaine Franklin: Debut and fights so far

Franklin was born in Saginaw, Michigan in October 1993.

He initially started boxing when he was 12 to stay out of trouble, and things have progressed from there.

He turned professional in 2015 when he made his debut against Deshawn Jenkins at the Riverside Ballroom, Green Bay.

He won a further 19 fights in a row leading up to October 2019.

Franklin is yet to have a career-defining win but he did rack up impressive victories over Rydell Booker (25-1-0) and Jerry Forrest (25-2-0) during that run.

But he then had a two-and-a-half-year break from the sport due to issues out of his hands.

Management problems saw the fighter nearly drop boxing entirely as he had to file for bankruptcy and take up a full-time job.

He told Sportsmail: “I was having issues. I had to support my family and I wasn’t really making money from boxing. I had to work to be able to support my family and then I had problems with my old manager.

“I had to file bankruptcy to get my assets back in order. My old manager got me in trouble with all kinds of stuff. He really didn’t have my best interests at heart. There was a lot going on during those two years of me being out of the ring.

“I was trying to but my work schedule was hard. It was really hard to fit it in. I had to get up and take my girls to school. It would be hard to go train, pick my girls up and then go right back to work after. I tried to. Every now and then I would pop up in the gym but it was really hard to do is consistently as my body was tired.”

Franklin finally returned to boxing in May 2022 against Rodney Moore before he fought Whyte at Wembley Arena.

This was the biggest fight of Franklin’s career and he put in a good display but lost via majority decision after going the full 12 rounds with the British heavyweight.

But the American was left fuming with the decision and demanded a rematch that hasn’t happened.

“I feel like I got robbed, I feel I’ve done enough to get the decision.

“I felt like I won earlier rounds. I just felt I got robbed on the decision. I had a seven week camp, I’ve done what I could.

“I’m down for a rematch if they give it to me, but I felt like I won, I felt like I got robbed on the decision.”

Jermaine Franklin: What’s next?

Franklin’s career has been building up to this moment when he takes on AJ.

He will earn a guaranteed £800,000 from the bout and could go home with a lot more should he win.

And Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has been blown away with Franklin’s body transformation.
