A new study found a link between long Covid and an increased risk of developing heart issues, but experts believe vaccines are the best tool to protect against long Covid.

Key Facts

A study published Thursday found having long Covid more than doubled a person’s chances of developing cardiovascular health issues.

Researchers reviewed 11 previous studies, which included data on long Covid and heart issues—almost 450,000 participants out of 5.8 million experienced cardiovascular issues, making the rate of cardiac complications in people with long Covid 2.3% to 2.5% higher than in other groups.

Long Covid is when someone has new or lingering symptoms following recovery from a Covid infection—including brain fog, loss of smell or taste, fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, depression and palpitations.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 15% of Americans over the age of 18 have experienced long Covid.

Of those 15%, 79% report having limitations on their everyday activities, and 27% of those respondents categorize those limitations as significant.

According to a February Nature study, over 65 million worldwide are estimated to have long Covid, and over 200 symptoms have been identified, which impact multiple organ systems.

Vaccines are the most effective preventative measure against long Covid as vaccinated patients are “50% less likely to develop long Covid or post Covid syndrome,” Dr. Devang Sanghavi told the American Medical Association.

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jason Toews shared he is dealing with long Covid symptoms and chronic immune response symptoms. The athlete hasn’t played a game since January 28, and the Blackhawks placed him on injured reserve on Wednesday due to a non-Covid-related illness.

Long Covid Symptoms

experience post-Covid symptoms presented in one of the following ways: they seem to recover from Covid, but then their symptoms return, they develop new health issues or symptoms within months of contracting Covid or they have symptoms that linger for either days, months or years. Symptoms of long Covid include digestive problems (like diarrhea or stomach pain), heart problems (like palpitations or chest pain), respiratory problems (like coughing or shortness of breath) or neurologic symptoms (like brain fog, sleep problems and headaches). There is not a certain test for long Covid. To diagnose it, a physician will ask about a patient’s medical history, conduct a physical exam and they may order blood work and imaging tests. Long Covid can last for months, with a typical case lasting for over a year. An August 2022 report published in the Lancet suggests that Covid vaccines reduce the risk

Who’s At Risk?

The CDC reports long Covid is more commonly found in people who experienced severe Covid symptoms, though anyone who’s had the virus is susceptible. People with underlying conditions, unvaccinated individuals and those who had multisystem inflammatory syndrome (a rare condition associated with Covid in which body parts like the kidneys and brain become inflamed) during or after Covid are most likely to develop long Covid, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Long Covid In Children

Children as young as six months of age are at risk of developing long Covid. A Nature study found nearly a quarter of children who get Covid will develop long-term symptoms. Most children recover from Covid (some at faster rates than adults), according to UNICEF, but symptoms may linger for some. Dr. Amanda Morrow, a pediatric rehabilitation physician told CNN the main long Covid symptom she sees in children is “severe fatigue.” According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, other symptoms of long Covid in children include muscle ache, stomach pain, difficulty concentrating, loss of taste and smell, a rash, pain and circulation issues.
