So, it’s important to know how long pizza lasts, how to refrigerate it properly and how to store it in order to retain its quality and freshness.

According to the USDA, leftover pizza can last up to four days in the refrigerator when it’s stored correctly. “Keep in mind that the duration can vary depending on certain factors such as the toppings and where in the refrigerator it is stored,” says Melanie Marcus, RD. No matter whether you ordered a veggie pie or the meat lover’s special, Marcus says all toppings are susceptible to spoilage after four days of refrigeration and should be eaten before that. However, certain pizza toppings may decline faster than four days. “Toppings that are wet in nature, such as pineapple, may become soggy and lend themselves to faster bacterial growth,” she explains.

How long can you leave pizza out before it goes bad?

If you’ve left pizza out overnight, eaten it the next morning and lived to tell the tale, consider yourself lucky. “Any food that has been left out at room temperature for more than two hours should be discarded,” says Marcus, as per USDA guidelines.
