IPL: In a retention scenario, you look for skill sets, not players or emotions, says Venky Mysore

retentions are once again a subject of national curiosity; they rarely leave you disappointed. Inevitably, there are calls that lead to debate and conjecture and add to the chatter surrounding the world’s most valued cricket property. This time too it was no different. Franchise owners and management teams have their unique ways of thinking, and it allows a sneak peak into their auction strategies going forward.

The most discussed news from the retention and release exercise was KL Rahul, who parted ways with Punjab Kings and will be donning new colours in IPL 2022. Why would the Punjab Kings let Rahul go? Was it Rahul’s call entirely to part ways and if so why? The other major release was Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan. Arguably the best spinner in the T20 format, Rashid was released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who also parted ways with Australia opener David Warner. These two have been the two biggest match-winners for SRH for years and the franchise’s failure to retain them raises questions over the management team.

The two are going to be major attractions in the auction, provided they are not drafted by the two new franchises — Lucknow and Ahmedabad. The two new teams, which were both observing the retention closely, are now at the crease for the start of their IPL innings. They are allowed to pick three players — 2 Indian and 1 foreigner. These three picks could well form the core of their teams. “We want to build a young team that stays together at least for the next few years and leaves a lasting imprint on the tournament,” said Sanjiv Goenka, chairman of RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG) and owner of Lucknow franchise. “We have time for the next few weeks and it’s only Ahmedabad and Lucknow that can pick up players for the next 20 odd days.

We have a clear vision in place for the team and will go about implementing that vision,” he added. The grapevine has it that Goenka is currently in talks with Rahul and is also seeking a top international allrounder and a pacer. Ahmedabad too are on the job and the tried and tested trio of Ravi Shastri, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar have all been spoken to by team CVC. Having handled the Indian team and with immense knowledge of sports science and biomechanics, the trio could be a good start for Ahmedabad. Sources suggest they are speaking to the Pandya brothers and also to Shreyas Iyer who hasn’t been retained by the Delhi franchise and could well turn out to be a captaincy option for Ahmedabad. The other release that not many have spoken about is Shubman Gill.

Once tipped as the successor to Virat Kohli, Gill is now more a red ball specialist and it wasn’t a surprise to see Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy being retained ahead of him by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). “In a retention scenario, you look for skill sets and not players.

You don’t look at names or go by emotions,” said Venky Mysore, KKR CEO. “The guiding principle for us has been what skill sets are rare and are difficult to get in an auction setting. If we find such skill sets in our existing team, we will want to retain them at every cost. That’s what we have done with our retentions. “I have been associated with KKR for 11 years now and going into my 12th and have seen four major auctions. The lessons I have learnt have given me the experience to approach retentions in a particular way. Right or wrong, there is a process,” he added.
