0 94

Jared Leto and Jamie Lee Curtis have joined the cast of Disney’s upcoming Haunted Mansion. The film is based on the popular theme park attraction that launched in 1969 in California’s Disneyland. According to EW, Leto will play the Hatbox Ghost, who appears on the ride, while Curtis will play Madame Leota, the psychic whose head can be seen inside the ride’s crystal ball. The two join previously announced cast members Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito and Tiffany Haddish.

Haunted Mansion is directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People) and written by Katie Dippold (Parks and Recreation). The horror-comedy follows single mom and doctor Gabbie, played by Dawson, and her nine-year-old son (Chase Dillon). The two move into a New Orleans mansion with an affordable price tag. As it turns out, the two discover that they are not alone in the mansion, and that it is home to otherworldly inhabitants.

Looking to rid her home of the uninvited guests, Gabbie reaches out to a priest (Owen Wilson), a scientist-turned-paranormal investigator (LaKeith Stanfield), a historian (Danny DeVito), and a psychic (Tiffany Haddish) for help.

Simien’s version is not the first adaptation of the attraction. Back in 2022, Disney took the visitor favorite attraction from its parks to the big screen with a film starring Eddie Murphy and directed by Rob Minkoff. The movie was not well-received by critics or audiences.

Simien’s Haunted Mansion movie opens on March 10, 2023, and is the first Disney film based on an attraction to get a reboot.

This is not Curtis’ first film with Disney. The Halloween actress first collaborated with Disney for the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday, opposite Lindsay Lohan. Curtis stars as Tess Coleman, whose body is switched with her daughters through a magical fortune cookie. Freaky Friday was the third adaptation of the novel, following a 1976 film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster and a 1995 made-for-TV film with Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffmann. Curtis earned a Golden Globe nomination for her part in the film.

Curtis later appeared as Vivian “Viv” Ashe in the 2008 film, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, about a Chihuahua named Chloe, who is dog-napped in Mexico. In 2010, Curtis appeared on the Disney-distributed film You Again, in the role of Gail Byer Olsen.

Curtis will appear in the upcoming Halloween Ends, reprising her role of Laurie Strode. She is also slated to appear in Eli Roth’s upcoming science fiction film Borderlands.
