Love Whales? Put Baja’s Loreto On Your 2023 Travel List

0 52

This laidback city on the Baja Peninsula has fabulous whale watching year round and especially so during the first few months of the year.

Loreto, Baja California Sur

Loreto is on the eastern side of the Baja Peninsula, north of charming La Paz and busy Cabo San Lucas. Alaska Airlines flies to Loreto from Los Angeles and a few Mexican airlines have connections through Tijuana. From Canada, Westjet flies directly to Loreto from Calgary.

Loreto is one of Mexico’s pueblos magicos (towns with exceptional cultural authenticity, beauty, history or legends). This city of about 20,000 peo0ple is known for its tranquil vibe and warm hospitality, stunning mountains, white sand beaches that look like they should be in the Caribbean, and the vast underwater life in the Sea of Cortez, called the aquarium of the world by Jacques Cousteau.

Loreto is an extra special place for whales and for the people who love them and is an ideal destination for whale watching. More than 20,000 whales visit the waters off Baja—humpbacks, fin whales, minkes and dolphins all swim here, but the highlights are blue whales and gray whales.

Baja Sur’s blue whales

The Bay of Loreto National Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is favored by the world’s 11,000 remaining blue whales—the largest animals on the planet—and Loreto is one one of the easiest (and warmest) places to see them.

Blue whales usually arrive in the Sea of Cortez in late January and stay until mid-March. You can take a blue whale watching trip with several Loreto companies, including Wild Loreto Tours and Tours Loreto, to see these incredible 100-foot-long creatures.

Gray whales in Baja Sur

Gray whales stay near Baja generally from late December or January until April. Baja has three calm and shallow bays—Mulegé’s Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lagoons plus Magdalena Bay—on its Pacific coast that gray whales favor for mating, giving birth and getting their young ready for the long swim north to Canada.

Gray whales feel so comfortable in these bays that they behave here like they do nowhere else in the world: they interact with the humans who come to see them, even coming up to the boats (called pangas) to be petted.

You can visit one of these bays on a day trip from Loreto (or from La Paz, further south). You’ll have an excellent chance of spotting several gray whales and dolphins. If you’re lucky, you’ll also see 50-foot-long mother whales lifting their giant babies out of the water with their tails (it’s not clear whether this is more for the humans to admire the baby or for the baby to get a good look at the strange beings oohing delightedly from within the wood pangas). And if the whales desire it, they might even swim right up to your boat and lift their heads out to get a gentle scratch from you.
