A new image has arrived from Netflix’s hotly-anticipated action thriller The Gray Man. The film stars Ryan Gosling as the CIA’s top assassin, Court Gentry, who is hunted by his psychopathic former colleague, Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), after uncovering the agency’s shady secrets. The Gray Man is one of the most anticipated movies of the year and marks the first pairing between Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.
With a budget of $200 million, The Gray Man is touted as Netflix’s most expensive film yet and is directed by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier). The Gray Man is based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name, and is expected to spawn a major franchise for Netflix, on par with the James Bond series. However, to achieve that, the film would require characters that not only resonate with the audience but also happen to be unique and interesting. And that could be a challenging task, considering The Gray Man revolves around mercenaries and spies who kill people for a living.
But Gosling promises that his character, Courtland Gentry, aka Sierra Six, is just an everyman action hero who only desires freedom above everything else but is forced to work for the CIA instead. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Gosling also revealed that Gentry has a wicked sense of humor that he often uses to get out of trouble. Here’s what he said:
“What I liked about this character is that he wants something that most of us want, which is just to be free. His goals aren’t monetary, it’s not about treasure, it’s not revenge. He just wants to have the right to sit on the couch and watch Netflix like the rest of us. In almost every scene we tried to set it up so that he was at a disadvantage. And it becomes about watching him use whatever is in his environment to gain leverage. And what he uses most consistently is a sense of humour. It’s a survival tool. If he can find what’s funny about the absurdity of the situation, he can distance himself from the danger of it.”
Empire also released a brand new image from The Gray Man that offers a new look at Gosling’s fierce yet relatable super-spy. You can check it out below.
The Gray Man Features A Star-Studded Ensemble
Netflix has spared no expense in assembling an A-list star cast for The Gray Man. With Hollywood heartthrobs Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in the lead, the film also features rising stars Ana de Armas (No Time to Die, Knives Out) and Rege-Jean Page (Bridgerton), the next James Bond contender. Jessica Henwick, Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Gandolfini, Alfre Woodard, Wagner Moura, Dhanush, Julia Butters, and Scott Haze will also appear in The Gray Man.
While the talent involved in The Gray Man is remarkable, Netflix’s blockbuster films haven’t been clicking with the viewers lately. Hopefully, The Gray Man will fare better than the likes of Red Notice and 6 Underground. Another reason to get excited about the film is Chris Evans’ villainous turn as a psychopathic assassin. The makers have promised that Evans will be one of the highlights of the film, and we have no doubt, especially after his brilliant performance in Knives Out.
The Gray Man will debut in theaters on July 15, 2022, before streaming on Netflix starting July 22.
