An Ocean’s Eleven prequel is moving forward. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Margot Robbie is on board to star in a new Ocean’s film that would also feature the Barbie actress in a lead role, presumably as part of an ensemble cast with other big names. The film is set to be directed by Jay Roach, who previously helmed 2019’s Bombshell, a film that earned Robbie an Oscar nomination. The project is reportedly in active development at Warner Bros., and while it hasn’t been officially greenlit just yet, the plan is to start shooting by spring 2023.
Details have not been revealed about the story, but it is said to be a prequel that’s set in Europe during the 1960s, making it unlikely any stars from the previous Ocean’s films would be reprising their roles. Robbie is also producing in addition to starring in the film, serving as a producer alongside LuckyChap partner Tom Ackerley. Roach will also produce alongside Michelle Graham for Everyman Pictures. Gary Ross, Olivia Milch, and Josey McNamara are executive producing. The screenplay is written by Carrie Solomon.
Robbie can be recognized for any number of roles, though she made a particularly big splash in pop culture with her role as Harley Quinn in the DCEU. Along with Bombshell, she has also been nominate for an Academy Award for her role in the Tonya Harding biopic I, Tonya, with other notable roles including The Wolf of Wall Street, Mary Queen of Scots, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She will lead the cast of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film based on the popular Mattel toy line, and there are plans for her to star in a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot.
Aside from Bombshell, director Jay Roach is well known for helming the Austin Powers movie trilogy with Mike Myers. He also directed the Ben Stiller comedy Meet the Parents along with its sequel, Meet the Fockers. His other films include Dinner for Schmucks, The Campaign, and Trumbo.
Ocean’s Eleven’s Original Timeline May Still Move Forward
The original Ocean’s trilogy kicked off in 2001 with Ocean’s Eleven, which tells the story of an elaborate Las Vegas casino heist. It was a smash success at the box office, which brought about the sequel Ocean’s Twelve in 2004 followed by Ocean’s Thirteen in 2007. Steven Soderbergh directed all three of the original films.
The franchise was revived in 2018 with the female-led spinoff, Ocean’s 8. Directed by Gary Ross, the film imagined a new heist at the Met Gala carried about by a team of elite thieves with an ensemble cast including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter.
While Margot Robbie is taking the franchise’s high-stakes thievery to the past with a prequel, Soderbergh has been keeping the door open for Ocean’s Fourteen, so we may not have seen the last of the original cast just yet. Last year, Don Cheadle claimed that Soderbergh was planning another sequel, though Bernie Mac’s tragic death had certainly hindered those plans. However, Cheadle teased that Soderbergh had another idea come to him that would be good for the potential film, though nothing was set in stone.
“We were talking about it, and then Bernie [Mac] passed, and very quickly we were like, ‘No, we don’t want to do it,'” Cheadle said. “But I just did a movie with Steven and he said, ‘I think there may be a way to do it again. I’m thinking about it.’ And it didn’t go much further than that. But I don’t know; I don’t know who all would be in it. I imagine the main group of us would be in. It would be interesting to see.”
