NEW YORK — An NYPD officer is hospitalized with critical injuries after being attacked while off-duty in the Bronx.
Police are now investigating whether it was part of a larger crime spree in the borough.
The officer has been on the force for 18 years. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital with a fractured skull and brain bleed.
Police said the 48-year-old was jogging around 10 a.m. Tuesday along Olmstead Avenue when he was approached by three men.
The suspects hit him in the head repeatedly and stole his phone, keys and wallet before jumping into a black Honda and taking off down Turnbull Avenue.
Police said the suspects could be connected to 19 other recent robberies in the area.
Back on August 8, surveillance video captured three men armed with guns pull a man from his car before driving off in it down Lydig Avenue.
On August 22, another video showed three suspects, one carrying a knife, get out of a black Honda and rob a man along Quimby Avenue. Around the same time that day, the three men were also seen robbing a woman of her purse on Quimby.
So far, no arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
