Napa’s Model Bakery, best known for its fluffy English muffins made famous by Oprah Winfrey, is heading to Walnut Creek.

On Friday, Model Bakery announced on Instagram it has plans to debut its first Bay Area store outside Napa County. The forthcoming store is expected to open at 1315 N Main St. in the former space of shuttered La Fogata restaurant, as first shared by Walnut Creek Magazine.

Sarah Hansen, who co-owns Model Bakery with her mom, Karen Mitchell, told SFGATE in a statement that she hopes to open the newest bakery sometime by the end of the year. She added that her team is currently renovating the building ahead of the grand opening.

“We’re making some extensive upgrades to the space, which will allow us to make fresh pastries, as well as our famous English muffins in-house,” Hansen said.

As for why Walnut Creek was chosen, Hansen told The Press Democrat it was based on customer zip codes.

“We looked at the most common zip codes of people who visit us and buy our English muffins and the Walnut Creek and Danville area was one of the top ones,” Hansen told The Press Democrat. “Our goal is to grow as much as we can. If this goes well, we may look at going down to the Peninsula, as there’s a lot of demand down there.”

Model Bakery has been in business for more than 100 years and is cherished by locals for its baked goods, including various types of loaves, cookies and more. But after Oprah Winfrey, a bonafide bread enthusiast, added Model Bakery’s fluffy English muffins to her “Favorite Things” beginning in 2016, the bakery became an overnight sensation. In 2016, Winfrey told People Magazine that her “greatest extravagance is flying in English muffins from Napa Valley.”

“We send them to her on sets, and she passes them out to other people,” Karen Mitchell previously told SFGATE in 2017. “I heard Reese Witherspoon on one of the late-night shows talking about ‘these muffins that Oprah drags around.’ … They’ve caught on with a lot of people and we ship them all over the country.”
