A man is in hospital with a suspected fractured skull after being struck by a car which then crashed and caught fire in Surry Hills on Monday night, police say.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Oxford Street and Wentworth Avenue at about 11.30pm after passers-by found the 33-year-old man lying on the road.

A Toyota Yaris crashed into a parked SUV in Surry Hills on Monday.

Police were told a blue Toyota Yaris hatchback had been travelling west along Oxford Street when it turned into Wentworth Avenue and struck the man, who was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing.

The car continued into Wentworth Avenue before hitting a parked SUV and catching fire. Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command were told the driver left the scene.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the injured man before taking him to St Vincent’s Hospital where he is undergoing treatment for head injuries, including a suspected fractured skull.

The man is reportedly in a serious but stable condition.

The hatchback was destroyed and the SUV damaged before officers from Fire and Rescue NSW were able to control the fire.

Wentworth Avenue was closed overnight between Oxford and Goulburn streets while the scene was examined by officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit.

The road has since been reopened.
