These days, its hard to find a place where pet owners wont be joined by their fur companion. However, one controversial place that dogs are commonly still not allowed is at the pub.
A recent change.org petition organised by Samuel Roundtree has gathered a whopping 11,000 signatures for dogs to be allowed in pubs.
On Mornings with Neil Mitchell 3AW, the Councillor for the City of Yarra, Stephen Jolly has voiced his support for the petition.

“It’s just an area that the council don’t really need to get involved with,” he told host Neil Mitchell.
“It’s not like the dogs are going into kitchens or restaurants. It’s not like the dogs are going to a live music venue at 12 o’clock at night and, you know, annoying the punters,” he explained.
Jolly then shared that he is backing the petition as it is important for the mental health of many city inhabitants who don’t have access to gardens for their pets.

The councillor then addresses concerns that Mitchell brought up about having animals in a space that serves food.
Jolly clarified that the petition is for owners to be able to bring their dogs into what is referred to as the “beer garden” in laid back venues such as neighbourhood pubs.
“You’ve got to go through an area and it’s not happening in pubs where the pub owners don’t want it to happen,” he said.
The petition organiser Samuel Roundtree also shared his response to concerns raised over animals being allowed into food areas.
“I had one person comment saying I don’t want a dog making my parma, but they’re certainly not in the kitchen and without opposable thumbs there’s no risk of that” he told Mitchell.
However, the petition founder made it clear that the goal of the movement is “not pushing for broader acceptance”.
“We are pushing for the people who have already chosen and historically do accept dogs to just be left alone,” he clarified after admitting that he doesn’t believe 90 per cent of city pubs should have dogs as they are not welcome by the proprietors there.
