Premier Mark McGowan slammed for ‘double standards’ over strict WA border rules

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has been slammed for holding a “double standard” over his notoriously strict border rules.

The WA government plans to allow the England and Australian cricket teams to spend just five days in quarantine to allow the Perth Ashes cricket Test to go ahead as planned.

Meanwhile, family and friends of those in WA continue to be banned from the state until it reaches the 90 per cent vaccination target sometime in 2022.

Anyone wishing to enter WA from another state is required to apply for a special G2G pass and then complete 14 days of quarantine at their own expense.

The only exception to this will be the cricket teams.

Opposition health spokeswoman Libby Mettam posted on Twitter that the two separate sets of rules were deeply unfair.

Aussies with loved ones they haven’t been able to visit since WA slammed its borders shut expressed similar outrage in responses to Ms Mettam’s post.

“Myself, hubby and 11 month old twins will have to sick up 14 days of hotel quarantine but grown men getting paid to do it can’t?” wrote one poster.

“Don’t get me wrong I was just happy to get out for a while but the double standards are frustrating.”

“This infuriates me so much. So much bias, angled directly toward the rich and famous, yet regular folk are banned from WA to begin jobs and be reunited with family after so long separated,” wrote another.

But Mr McGowan defended the move, insisting people would have been outraged no matter what decision he made.

“Sport is terrific for morale, but you can’t win. Everyone criticising us for not having the Ashes will now criticise us for holding the Ashes. That seems to be the reality of what the government’s dealing with at the moment,” he said.

“These things are put in place by health officials and police, I don’t involve myself directly in them, but as our vaccination rates lift, obviously rules change.

“We’ll be on the cusp of reopening our interstate and international borders when the Test is held. It’s all subject to quarantine and subject to testing regimes and the like.”

The match is set to start on January 15, 2022 to allow the cricketers a five-day quarantine period after the fourth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

After completing the five-day quarantine, Australian and England players would then play under strict quarantine conditions for the first two days of the Perth Test, having no contact with fans in the stands.

WA is expected to reach the 90 per cent fully vaccinated target sometime in late January or early February next year.
