Projected college basketball rankings after Auburn upset by Florida, Kentucky survives Alabama

0 77

Auburn went on the road to face a frisky Florida team and got caught while Kentucky fought off Alabama. Now, we look at our college basketball rankings.

Whenever the Auburn Tigers have been at home this season, there has been no doubt about their status as a top-five team in the college basketball rankings. Particularly in SEC play, though, they have gotten more than their fair share of scares when they’ve had to go on the road. And Saturday held a trip to Gainesville to face the Florida Gators.

It was undoubtedly a tricky spot for the No. 2-ranked Tigers to find themselves in and that played out on the floor. The Gators held everyone not named Jabari Smith at bay throughout the game and, even then, Auburn still had a chance to win on the final possession, but fumbled it to take the road loss.

They’ll be dropping in the college basketball rankings but the likes of Kentucky, Texas Tech and Baylor won’t after they picked up big conference wins early on Saturday. So what does that mean for the top 10? Let’s take a look at our projections.

College basketball rankings: Projections after Auburn upset by Florida, Kentucky and Texas Tech win comfortably

  1. Gonzaga Bulldogs
  2. Arizona Wildcats
  3. Purdue Boilermakers
  4. Kansas Jayhawks
  5. Auburn Tigers
  6. Baylor Bears
  7. Kentucky Wildcats
  8. Duke Blue Devils
  9. Villanova Wildcats
  10. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Even with how well the teams around them have played, the overall body of work makes it difficult to think that Auburn is going to drop out of the top five of the rankings after this loss. Falling by one point on the road to a conference foe isn’t something that voters are going to overreact to — especially at this point in the year.

Having said that, they are definitely going to fall and the back-end of the top-five would make a lot of sense.

When you combine the Tigers’ loss with Kentucky losing to Tennessee earlier in the week as well, there are going to be some big shifts at the top of the college basketball rankings after a wild week on the hardwood.
