Fighters react to Julianna Pena scoring one of MMA’s greatest upsets, submitting Amanda Nunes to become the new UFC women’s bantamweight champion at UFC 269
In one of the most historical upsets in the history of professional Mixed Martial Arts, Julianna Pena has submitted Amanda Nunes to become the new UFC women’s bantamweight champion.
Nunes opened with some attacking of Pena’s left leg before dropping the challenger with a jab. Pena attempted to go from the floor into a takedown attempt, but Nunes defended it well and spent a couple of minutes attempting to lock in a choke on Pena. To the challenger’s credit, Pena attempted to lock in a kimura in the bout’s final minute but couldn’t get it.
Pena managed to make the fight the style she wanted in the second, however, as she tagged Nunes and started a brawl in the middle of the cage between the two, with champ and challenger both tagging one another.
Pena managed to score a takedown, however, and submitted Nunes with a choke in the second round.
It’s Nunes’s first loss since getting finished by Cat Zingano at UFC 178 in September 2014. Nunes had been bantamweight champion since defeating Miesha Tate at UFC 200.

The two were originally scheduled to face off in August at UFC 265, but the title bout had to be postponed due to Nunes testing positive for COVID-19.
Nunes has been unbeatable for years en route to becoming arguably the consensus G.W.O.A.T. in MMA. The defending champ-champ had most recently competed at UFC 259 in March, successfully retaining the women’s featherweight title with a quick finish of Megan Anderson.
Prior to tonight’s event, Nunes last defended the UFC women’s bantamweight championship at UFC 245 in December 2019, scoring a unanimous decision over Germaine de Randamie.
Pena returned to the UFC after two-and-a-half years away in July 2019, where she scored a decision over Nicco Montano. Between then and tonight, Pena was submitted by de Randamie and submitted Sara McMann, the latter result coming at the start of the year at UFC 257.
UFC 269 takes place on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Follow along with FanSided MMA, who is on-site, for all your news and highlights.
