Queensland premier takes a swipe at Dominic Perrottet after scrapping hotel quarantine

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has taken a swipe at her new New South Wales counterpart, saying he “jumped the gun” in scaling down the use of hotel quarantine.

Dominic Perrottet last Friday announced that, from November 1, Australians who arrive from overseas don’t need to quarantine at all, provided they’re fully vaccinated with a TGA-approved vaccine and have two recent negative COVID tests.

Speaking on Sunrise on Tuesday, Palaszczuk said she was blindsided by the announcement.

“New South Wales jumped the gun and surprised everybody,” she said.

“Because National Cabinet had decided that NSW would do a trial of seven days home quarantine, not zero quarantine.

“So that’s pretty interesting that people could come into Sydney from Dubai but they couldn’t go to Dubbo.

“I’m just very concerned that they’ve jumped the gun, we’re all supposed to be working together as part of the national plan and the National Cabinet.”

She said she looked forward to the next meeting of National Cabinet, due on November 5.

Under the four-phase national reopening plan, which is triggered by vaccine benchmarks, the cap on returning travellers is abolished at 80 per cent double dose coverage.

New South Wales met that mark on the weekend and is expected to be trending towards 90 per cent by the time November rolls around.

The third phase of the plan also allows for: “Gradual reopening of inward and outward international travel with safe countries and proportionate quarantine and reduced requirements for fully vaccinated inbound travellers”

The full reopening of international borders is not due until the fourth and final phase of the plan, which does not have a vaccine target associated with it yet.

Palaszczuk on Monday outlined her state’s plan to reopening the borders, but only for domestic travellers.

The plan depends on 70 per cent of Queenslanders being fully vaccinated, expected to occur by November 19.

By then, people in hotspots will be able to travel to Queensland by air if they are fully vaccinated and have tested negative for COVID in the past 72 hours.

They will still need to quarantine at home for 14 days.

From December 17, vaccinated travellers can enter via air or road and don’t need to quarantine, but must test negative within 72 hours of arrival.

Overseas arrivals with a negative COVID test can quarantine at home. Those who don’t meet vaccine requirements must complete 14 days of hotel quarantine.
