Raising a vegan baby by ‘crunchy’ Arizona mum whose family dog goes meat-free too: ‘Healthiest lifestyle in the world’

A “crunchy” mum has opened up about her decision to raise her baby boy as vegan, explaining she knew “from the start” that the diet choice was the “only way” for him.

Alice Llani says she was determined to raise Fern, 14 months, “naturally” before she even fell pregnant.

He was born in an “unassisted” birth in her apartment bathroom where Alice, from Arizona, “caught him herself”.

In Alice’s case, among other things, this means “no vaccines” as she’s “not afraid of germs or illnesses”; she takes Fern outside as much as possible, raises him on “breastmilk only” (no formula), vegan foods, organic products and avoids “fragranced” baby items.

“I always wanted to be vegan but didn’t have support from my family,” Alice candidly tells 7Lifestyle.

“I was vegetarian as a kid and as an adult until becoming fully vegan about three years ago.

Fern is the healthiest baby I know

“I knew from the start veganism was the only way for Fern. I feel so blessed to have learned the truth before conceiving Fern so he can be 100 per cent vegan.

“He’s never been exposed to animal foods, even in the womb.”

Alice doesn’t worry about her boy missing out on anything.

“Fern is the healthiest baby I know,” she says proudly. “Anything that isn’t vegan can be made vegan, and better than the original.

“Veganism has pushed me to become an awesome cook,” she explains.

“Any vegan food that doesn’t taste amazing just isn’t cooked properly. I think people (especially kids) who aren’t vegan are missing out. It’s the healthiest, guilt-free, eco-friendly lifestyle in the world.”

Alice is so convinced of the diet approach that the family dog – a Chi-Poo called Mrs Pancake – is vegan too.

Alice also uses cloth nappies, avoids plastic – Fern drinks out of glass bottles – and she believes in gentle parenting with no smacking and no “violating baby’s bodily autonomy”, which means no ear-piercing or circumcision.

Currently, Fern is mostly breastfed – and Alice plans to breastfeed him “as long as she can” and he shows interest.

“Once he no longer shows interest, I’ll pump and freeze it so he has medicine for when he’s sick,” she says.

As for other meals, Fern currently eats fruit and some cooked food.

“I believe humans are frugivores and we are supposed to eat 100 per cent raw diets, but I do cook food,” Alice explains.

“I wish I had the willpower to only eat raw foods. Fern is absolutely thriving. We’ve gotten comments on Fern everywhere we go.

“People come up to us and say he looks so alert and healthy. Fern was 21 pounds (9.5kg) at six months.

“I wouldn’t do anything differently if I had another baby. I’ve absolutely loved every season with my pregnancy, birth, and Fern.”

But Alice admits she receives “a ton” of criticism from parents who don’t agree with her approach.

“Sometimes I respond, but I usually just feel bad for them, move on, and try to lead by example,” Alice explains.

“They’re projecting their guilt. Many people are shocked – and then horrified – my son is vegan because they thought eating animals was necessary for survival and now they’re wondering if all the cruelty they’ve partaken in was unnecessary and maybe even detrimental to their kids’ health.”

And Alice’s commitment to veganism even goes as far as pregnancy tests – with the mum vowing not to take one unless she knows it’s vegan too.

“I do worry about that. But not really worry, just wonder,” she says. “We don’t use protection. I would welcome another baby but I’m not actively trying for one.

“I like the idea of not knowing I’m pregnant until I feel kicks.”

Alice urges other mums thinking of taking a similar approach to parenting to steer clear of anyone offering “unwanted advice”.

“Most unwanted parenting advice is regret looking for validation,” she declares, describing her own experience as “magical”.

“I feel so connected to my body and baby. I feel unstoppable,” she says.

“I know I am the best mum for my baby – and sadly I’ve noticed a lot of mums who went the medicalised route do not feel this way.”
