Ralf Rangnick opens up on recruitment meeting with Manchester United figures

0 91

Ralf Rangnick has assured Manchester United supporters work is underway ‘behind the scenes’ to strengthen the squad in the transfer market.

Rangnick met football director John Murtough, outgoing executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and chief executive-in-waiting Richard Arnold last week to discuss United’s recruitment plans.

United are unlikely to make any signings before the January transfer window closes as they do not expect any long-term targets to become available until the summer window.

Rangnick is already advising United on their recruitment strategy before he officially becomes a consultant to the club on July 1. Club sources say United’s recruitment process ‘solidifies’ this time of the year, when they compile a shortlist of targets.

Rangnick is unsure if Anthony Martial will leave this month amid the Frenchman’s wish to move on loan. Sevilla had an offer for Martial rejected as they offered to pay half of his wages and United want any buying club to cover them in full and pay a loan fee of around £6million.

Martial, 26, has started just four times this season and Rangnick has omitted him from the last four squads since it emerged the France international wishes to leave.

A midfielder is a priority position for United this year, with an attacking addition also expected, at the very minimum. United intend to execute deals from February onwards.

When asked if there would be any incomings this month, Rangnick replied: “I don’t know. We had some talks about that last week with John Murtough and with Ed and with Richard and we spoke about it but I’m not involved in that directly.

“So of course, they will let me know if something happens. Work behind the scenes is being done by John and his colleagues.”
