Rocky’s Market, known for its live music events, is closing

0 73

When Corinne Kinczel opened a second location to her Oakland grocery store Rocky’s Market in Brooklyn Basin, she envisioned a gathering space where the community could enjoy fresh, local produce and, eventually, live performances by the waterfront. But after two short years in business, the market is preparing to shutter at the end of the month.

Rocky’s Market Brooklyn Basin, including its indoor restaurant The Kitchen, is scheduled to permanently close Aug. 31 due to less foot traffic, Kinczel told SFGATE. The East Bay Times first reported the upcoming closure.

“There aren’t very many people doing business down here and that was one of the problems for us,” Kinczel told SFGATE. “It didn’t pan out how we envisioned.”

The closure of Rocky’s Market Brooklyn Basin will not affect the original grocery store location at 1440 Leimert Blvd. in Oakland, which will remain open. Kinczel, who co-owns Rocky’s Market with her husband Brady Bellis, purchased that market in 2016. Four years later, the couple debuted their second Rocky’s Market in April 2020 as the primary grocery store limb of Brooklyn Basin.

In May 2022, Brooklyn Basin property developer Signature Development Group announced that sections of 8th and 9th avenues would close indefinitely due to construction. Moreover, the announcement said that a new hourly parking lot was available on Embarcadero at 7th Avenue in lieu of free parking along the closed streets. The move also inadvertently limited free parking spaces near Rocky’s Market, which is at 288 9th Ave.

But Kinczel doesn’t fault the developers for the decision. In fact, she said it has been “amazing to work” with them. She said she believes that the biggest problem in operating the market during the past two years has been the pandemic, which, she said, “ruined everything.”

“COVID just took our plans, like everybody else,” Kinczel said. “We’ve been watching the numbers and they just started dropping, so we decided that it was time for us to go back and just have the one store up the hill and focus on that.”

The city of Oakland approved plans for Signature Development Group to redevelop the historic Brooklyn Basin in 2006, but it would take another few years before the groundbreaking ceremony in 2014. At the time, Signature Development Group shared that it planned to build a mixed-use space with affordable housing, commercial spaces, a public park and restoration of the surrounding wetlands throughout the next decade. Chinese-based investor Zarsion America committed $1.5 billion toward the project.

Kinczel said that when Rocky’s Market opened in 2020, she understood that she needed a way to draw customers, especially when the area was in its initial construction phase of building residential housing. With a background in the restaurant industry and catering for her other business, Two Local Girls, Kinczel decided that the logical step was to open a restaurant. She opened The Kitchen within the market in July 2020, offering a seasonally focused menu that included clam chowder, burgers and breakfast sandwiches made with Boichik Bagels, among other dishes.

But more than the food inside the store, the biggest draw to Rocky’s Market Brooklyn Basin came when Kinczel began integrating live music events, flamenco performances and comedy shows right by the waterfront outside her store. The comedy shows came first in 2021, after one of Kinczel’s former high school friends connected her with comedian Holly Shaw, who helped produce the shows. Oaklandside reported that members of the Oakland Symphony eventually dropped by to scope the scene and later hosted a concert series there in August 2021.

On the first day of the Oakland Symphony concert series on Aug. 19, 2021, conductor Michael Morgan was in the hospital being treated for an infection caused by a kidney transplant, the New York Times reported. He passed away the next day. Kinczel said that the following performance by the Oakland Symphony, on Aug. 26, 2021, was a tribute concert for the late trailblazer.

“It was just a really special time for the people who were involved in the symphony, and for us to be able to have hosted it,” Kinczel said.

Kinczel said that the regular performances would draw guests by the thousands and regularly sell out shows. She said a silver lining throughout the pandemic was the ability to provide a safe outside space where guests could enjoy entertainment.

Rocky’s Market is hosting its last live flamenco show by Melissa Cruz Flamenco on Friday, Aug. 26. Kinczel said that she’ll miss the flamenco performances most, as well as watching the sailboats pass by the store, and of course, the sunsets.

Kinczel said that Rocky’s Market may be converted into a new restaurant space, but she said she didn’t know what business is expected to take over. A Signature Development Group spokesperson wouldn’t confirm whether a restaurant was taking up the space but told SFGATE via email that Brooklyn Basin is currently “evaluating proposals on a case-by-case basis” and that “there may be opportunities to continue performances once a new tenant is in place.”

“We really put our heart and soul into [Rocky’s Market Brooklyn Basin] and made it into a really special place for people to come and enjoy live music and comedy,” Kinczel said. “I hope that it continues without us.”
