samsung: 43 regional electronic stores shun Samsung

0 57

A group of 43 leading regional electronic retail chains have decided to stop selling Samsung’s premium LED televisions after such products were sold at a huge discount by some national retail chains during the just concluded Republic Day sales.

The retailers, with more than 1,800 large format stores and a cumulative revenue of more than ₹20,000 crore, sent a letter to Samsung India Electronics managing director JB Park on Monday under the banner of Association of Consumer Electronics and Home Appliances Traders. It said they “will not purchase any QLED or Neo QLED from Samsung till such time” that they “do not get a concrete assurance that such predatory practices will not be repeated again and the perpetrators of such actions are not shown certain tough actions”.

The letter said certain national retailers have sold such premium televisions at 5-10% below the cost at which these regional retailers buy from the company. “This is something unheard of and what shocks us even more that in spite of being in the knowledge of your team, absolutely no action was taken against the erring dealers or any assurance given to the trade that this kind of kill the competition tactics of such dealers will not be repeated again,” it said.

While the letter did not mention the names of the national retailers, two industry executives said they were Reliance Retail and Tata-owned Croma. These televisions are priced above ₹1 lakh apiece. The Republic Day sales – an event created by retailers and malls – is the second largest consumption event in the country after the festive season.

The association has among its members regional retailers including Viveks, Great Eastern Retail, Adishwar, Girias, Kohinoor, Pai Electronics and Khosla Electronics. The 43 retailers have a cumulative revenue of more than ₹20,000 crore.

The letter to Samsung India Electronics said these retailers will stop purchasing the premium televisions from February 15 and that the decision “will stay in effect till such time corrective actions are taken” and they are assured of a level playing field.

Queries emailed to Samsung India Electronics did not elicit a response till press time.
