SF Muni bus lines returning after suspension from the pandemic

The power of community feedback is on display with the return of multiple Muni bus lines that will begin connecting neighborhoods together or with downtown San Francisco starting July 9.

These routes were suspended in March 2020 due to the pandemic and a shift in ridership. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) announced at the onset of the pandemic that they were cutting service to the majority of their 89 bus lines as ridership plummeted due to the COVID-19 shelter in place. 

Over the last two years, SFMTA reached out to riders by releasing a survey and hosting several open houses to determine which routes passengers most desired. The transit agency said it focused on bus lines that connected folks to essential destinations like hospitals and neighborhood commercial corridors. Their research gives a glimpse into how travel trends shifted since March 2020. 

“Trip patterns have changed over the last two years with a noticeable shift in San Francisco residents traveling neighborhood to neighborhood instead of the peak period downtown-centric travel pattern that was prevalent pre-pandemic,” the agency said

Below are the major lines that are coming back either in full form or with tweaks to their service. The SFMTA isn’t finished with its expansion, so check their website for opportunities to voice your concerns or preferences.

2 Sutter / Clement


Connecting the Inner Richmond with the Ferry Building

The revived line starts on Clement Street by 15th Avenue and heads east for Ferry Plaza on Steuart Street near Embarcadero. The route provides access to the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco on California Street. SFMTA said they heard from many seniors that the Jewish Community Center food hub was a priority.

6 Haight / Parnassus

Connecting the Inner Sunset with the Ferry Building by way of Market Street

A line between UCSF and downtown, the 6 Haight / Parnassus returns with its route through the heart of the city. Beginning on 14th Avenue and Quintara Street, the line crosses over Parnassus, cuts through Cole Valley and rides Haight Street to Market.

21 Hayes

Connecting the Inner Richmond by Golden Gate Park with Civic Center 

The 21 Hayes restores a connection from Saint Mary’s Hospital to the Civic Center BART station and the Main Library. It will no longer continue downtown on Market Street.

23 Monterey

Connecting West Portal with Bayview

The route will now restore pre-pandemic alignment on Sloat Boulevard to the San Francisco Zoo.

52 Excelsior

Connecting Inner Sunset via Forest Hill to the Excelsior

This line will be fully restored to its pre-pandemic route. Starting near McLaren Park at Dublin Street and La Grande Avenue, the ride goes up to Diamond Heights before connecting to Laguna Honda Boulevard.
