Sixth ‘likely’ case of Omicron variant detected in NSW

NSW Health has indicated a sixth case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard announced on Wednesday a man in his 40s from Cabramatta who arrived from southern Africa “likely” has the new strain of the virus.

He tested positive for COVID on Tuesday after experiencing some symptoms.

The man, who spent six months in Nigeria, is fully vaccinated but was in the community prior to testing positive.

“At this stage, the indications are the missing S gene, the first indicator, and we believe it’s likely it will be confirmed later this afternoon as a definite Omicron case,” Mr Hazzard said.

The health minister added the man has “mild symptoms” and “we’re hoping that stays the case”.

Mr Hazzard said the man arrived on flight QR908 last week – the same flight as another woman who was confirmed to have the Omicron variant.

Following her arrival, the woman visited Top Ryde Shopping Centre and Westfield Parramatta on November 26 before travelling to the Central Coast, where she lives.

She is now in isolation at home.

Everyone who was on the same flight is considered a close contact and is required to test and self-isolate for 14 days, regardless of their vaccination status.

More exposure sites are expected to be listed later on Wednesday.

“My alert to the community – watch what happens today in terms of advice from health,” Mr Hazzard said.

“If you have been in those same locations at the relevant times, please go and get tested.”

‘Change in approach’

Australia has recorded seven Omicron cases so far, six of which are in NSW.

Another one is in the Northern Territory.

Mr Hazzard said he and Premier Dominic Perrottet are “not keen to see a return to lockdown”.

“As one who has delivered that news, bad news to the community on many occasions, I feel like it’s time for a change in approach,” he said.

“We don’t know how many more variants of this virus are going to come.

“So, I think the challenge for us as a government and the other governments, particularly the Victorian government, that we’re working very closely with, is to strike a different balance to the ones we had in the past.”

NSW recorded 251 new cases of COVID on Wednesday.
