A single-engine plane crashed onto a soccer field in the Wilmington area Monday, critically injuring both people aboard the aircraft.
The crash was reported in the 400 block of West Westmont Drive at 12:53 p.m., according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
“The pilot was still in the plane upon LAFD arrival and (was) extricated,” Stewart said in a statement.
“Both patients were transported … in critical condition,” Stewart said. “There was no fire and no other patients reported.”
The two people were both taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, according to reports from the scene.
According to an LAFD spokesman, the flight originated in Torrance.
Authorities were investigating the circumstances of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board will ultimately take over the investigation to determine what caused the plane to go down.
“This plane crashed into the Field of Dreams,” county Supervisor Janice Hahn, who represents the area, said on X, formerly Twitter. “We have heard that the pilot and a passenger have been transported to the hospital in critical condition. Praying that they both survive and grateful that no one on the ground was injured.”
