Suspect in custody after San Jose police officer shot responding to family disturbance
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — A suspect is in custody after a police officer was shot while responding to a family disturbance at a home on Auzerais Avenue Wednesday morning, the San Jose Police Department confirmed. The female officer who was shot was transported to a hospital.
The officer is in stable but critical condition, per SJPD. The suspect, 44-year-old Gabriel Mario Carreras, was taken into custody around 12:30 p.m., according to officers at the scene.

Officers arrived at a residence on the 1300 block of Auzerais Avenue around 8:20 a.m. A woman called 911 reporting that her husband was drunk and tried to hit her, SJPD Chief Anthony Mata said. The wife said her husband had broken down the bathroom door.
Officers contacted the residents at the door and identified themselves as SJPD officers. Mata said the two officers were “ambushed” as the suspect opened fire from a balcony. One officer was shot.
The second officer helped the injured officer retreat from the shooting and began to treat her injuries. Mata called it “an act of undeniable courage that few of us will ever experience.”
Dozens of police officers swarmed the neighborhood and blocked off Meridian Avenue. The suspect exited the residence and was arrested after a standoff that lasted roughly 4 hours, per police.

The suspect’s wife was uninjured. There was nobody else in the home. Officers recovered a gun from the scene.
Mata said Carreras is a convicted felon on active felony probation.
The officer who was shot has 10 years of experience. She is the first female SJPD officer to be shot in the line of duty. Two SJPD officers have been shot in the line of duty this year.
“I am praying for the swift recovery of our San Jose PD officer who was shot this morning while responding to a domestic violence call,” Mayor Matt Mahan wrote. “She is currently at the hospital, and my thoughts are with her family during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Although a suspect is in custody, police are advising people to continue to avoid the area. Officers are expected to remain on the scene for some time.
