The Last Duel REVIEW: A brilliant medieval saga with thrilling battles | Films | Entertainment

0 19

Based on true events, the film recounts the build-up to a duel to the death involving Matt Damon’s mulleted knight and Adam Driver’s womanising squire in 14th century France. The story is told from three viewpoints and by three writers (Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener). At the centre of the feud is the rape of the knight’s young wife, played by the brilliant Jodie Comer.

It can be a grim watch and the film never fully explores issues of memory and testimony raised by the structure.

But details of the role of women in feudal France are striking, the final duel is brilliantly staged, and Ben Affleck adds much-needed laughs as a decadent aristocrat.
