Australian actress Danielle Macdonald starred alongside Fifty Shades Of Grey star Jamie Dornan in the explosive BBC drama The Tourist. The 30-year-old actress played overly-kind probationary constable Helen Chambers who was tasked with helping Jamie’s character, known as The Man, retrace his roots after waking up in hospital with amnesia following being chased off the road by a menacing truck driver. Ahead of the six-part series airing, Danielle opened up about a “clumsy” accident during filming which the director kept in the final cut.

The Tourist followed the mysterious story of an Irish man who found himself in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback with no recollection of his name or how he ended up Down Under.

In the opening scenes of the inaugural episode, Jamie’s character nearly lost his life in a serious car crash after a truck driver forced his car off a dusty rural road.

He later woke up in hospital with no memory whatsoever, and Helen was the inexperienced trainee police officer in charge of his case.

When she discovered Jamie’s character couldn’t even remember his name, she realised solving his case would be her toughest challenge yet.

Helen actress Danielle, who is perhaps best known as starring in Netflix’s Dumplin’ alongside Jennifer Aniston, spoke to Express.co.uk and other media about her role in The Tourist.

The actress explained how the outback drama was meant to be both hard-hitting for viewers as well as comical and lighthearted in places.

She reflected on the intense opening episode and revealed a blunder of hers which the director Chris Sweeney decided to keep in the BBC miniseries.

Danielle said she was filmed taking notes about The Man in his hospital room following his car crash when a pen flew out of her hand across the room while she was questioning him.

“It’s interesting because it’s very genre-bending. All this dramatic stuff happens and she’s just there and kind of goofy.

“It was a case of, ‘How do you fit her into this world?’ And those were some of the earlier talks we’ve had.”

During the same scene, Danielle’s character had to take pictures of The Man’s face to share online in a bid to see if anyone locally, or nationally, recognised him.

However, she said taking the close-up pictures of Jamie’s face ended up being another humorous moment in the drama.

Danielle explained: “My prop phone had golden pictures of Jamie’s face and I really hope they get out there one day.”

As the series progressed, Danielle’s character became embroiled in a string of dilemmas linked to The Man and the people who wanted him dead.

Other actors in The Tourist Line of Duty star Shalom Brune-Franklin, who plays Luci Miller, The Missing’s Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Billy Nixon and The Cry’s Alex Dimitriades as Kosta Panigiris.

The Tourist, which aired on BBC One on New Year’s Day, is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
