Trio who escaped Howard Springs quarantine facility located and taken into custody

Three people who escaped quarantine from the Howard Springs Centre for National Resilience in the Northern Territory have been located and taken into custody.

The trio fled the facility early on Wednesday morning after scaling a fence, Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services (PFES) said.

A police operation was launched following reports of the escape.

Motorists were earlier advised to follow directions in the vicinity of Howard Springs.

The trio were reported to have escaped the facility around 4.40am.

Just before midday, police announced they had been found.

“All three tested negative for COVID-19 yesterday. Inquiries are continuing,” PFES said.

The quarantine facility has been in operation since the beginning of the COVID pandemic.

Authorities in the NT confirmed this week one returned traveller, who is in quarantine at the facility, had tested positive to the new Omicron variant of the virus.

Just last week, a 27-year-old man escaped the facility and was picked up in a white ute.

He was later found at a licensed premises in Darwin.
