UK’s ‘cheapest fish and chip shop’ where price of a meal is only 5p

0 110

A fish and chip shop in Wales is selling a bag of chips for just 5 pence in a staggering deal. Iestyn Evans, owner of Iestyn’s Fish Bar, in Pontypool, Wales has seen families of five fed for just £12 and offers the deal “to give back” amid a cost of living crisis.

Iestyn is currently running a “cheap as chips” sale, which slashes £2.95 from the original price of a bag of chips.

This is available for just two hours on several randomly selected days per month, but usually on Tuesdays.

Customers can even take home a portion of battered chips within the deal, which usually cost £3.30.

The 28-year-old said: “We do have a good loyalty base. Prices are getting better for us but it’s too soon for us to put our prices down – but putting stuff like these little offers in does help.

“It gave everyone a little pick me up – a little bit of a buzz.”

The 5p bag is provided with any other main food item, whether shoppers decide to go for a small meal or a large battered cod meal.

Since introducing this deal, Iestyn has since seen a hoard of hungry customers queuing outside the much-loved chippy.

He claimed: “It was very popular for us. We’ve had loads of people coming in since then – mainly people who were a bit gutted that they’d missed out on it. They were like ‘When’s the next 5p days?’”

Happy customer Claudette Blair, 56, said: “It is very good for people who can’t afford a good meal. It’s good for the less fortunate than us.”

Local hairdresser Kerry Jones, 33, who lives in Sebastopol, said she had only found out about the offer the day before and was looking forward to feeding her family of five. She said: “I thought it was really cool – 5p for chips, you can feed the whole family for the evening.”

Meanwhile, another local, Kevin Galsworthy, 46, had come down after spotting the offer on the fish bar’s Facebook page. He thought the deal was “brilliant” and had picked up sausage and chips for under £2 himself.

He said: “You couldn’t cook it really for that yourself,” adding that he’d be back and “probably have fish and chips next time”.

Dan Rogers, 29, took home five bags of chips, four battered sausages and a saveloy, which came to just £12.

He said: “It’s feeding a family of five. Usually I’ve come here and it would be about £25 or £26 so it’s pretty much half. It’s one of the best chip shops around,” he told WalesOnline.
