Uvalde’s acting police chief during the school massacre with 21 dead has reportedly resigned – after the mayor said he would be gone by the end of the week.

Lt Mariano Pargas turned in his resignation, effective immediately, Mayor Don McLaughlin told CNN on Thursday afternoon.

Pargas, 65, was expected to be terminated at the latest at a ‘special meeting’ set for Saturday, according to McLaughlin.

‘Lt Pargas will not be a member of the Uvalde police department. At the very latest at the end of the week, if not sooner,’ McLaughlin told CNN on Tuesday.

McLaughlin placed Pargas on administrative leave in July after police body cam footage raised questions around whether the acting police chief made any moves to take command of the massacre unfolding. A dispatcher told Pargas that eight or nine students were still alive inside a classroom with the shooter present.

The 18-year-old gunman, Salvador Ramos, shot and killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School on May 24, in what is the deadliest school massacre in the US in a decade.

At a county commissioners meeting on Tuesday, some Uvalde residents called on Pargas to resign.

‘He was made aware that people were injured and dying and yet he did nothing,’ said Jesse Rizo, the uncle of one of the children killed. ‘A young girl called 911 in room 112 asking for help and he simply left her and other people to die.’

Rizo said to Pargas, who was not present at the meeting: ‘You’ve brought shame to the community.’

Pargas was reelected as a county commissioner earlier this month.

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District fired its police chief, Pete Arredondo, in August.

Police officers waited 77 minutes after arriving on campus before entering the classroom and shooting down Ramos, according to a report by the Texas House of Representatives in July.
