Victoria widens Pfizer access as part of final vaccination push as lockdown end approaches

0 98

Victoria will widen access to COVID-19 vaccines and mental health support, opening pop-up sites and allowing people to walk into state vaccination centres without a booking.

Deputy Premier James Merlino said the state government will open 30 vaccination centres across the state for walk-up Pfizer injections.

The government has also partnered with youth mental health service Headspace to open nine pop-up vaccine clinics in Collingwood, Frankston, Greensborough, Glenroy and Sunshine next week.

The clinics will widen access to the jab for marginalised or struggling young people.

“Headspace is a highly trusted youth mental health organisation with a strong connection to the community and able to create an environment for people to get the jab,” Melino said on Thursday.

Some 20 pop up mental health services have opened across the state and are now taking referrals for both in-person and telehealth appointments.

Merlino also announced $5.68 million in funding will go to expanding specialist mental health care, including the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Centre for Excellence in Eating Disorders.

Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre’s brain disorders unit will also receive funding so it can support more young people living with acquired brain injuries and mental illness.

St Vincent’s Hospital’s Victorian Transcultural Mental Health will receive a boost to build on its capacity.
